A great video for Dylan fans... as well as fans of great music in general
My favorite Dylan album is "The Times They Are A Changin'"...and this wonderful video captures the feelings of that time period in his career. Its in black and white which I feel adds to the authenticity of it. There are a few live performances - but the crux of this video is the "behind the scence" look at his life, his interactions, his writing style during this tour. Highlights include Donovan visiting Bob and playing his new song for him...then asking Bob to play one of his new songs. Another is a glimpse of his focus in writing material at his typewriter amidst people singing, talking, drinking, etc... all around him. A couple of the above reviewers are incredibly uninformed, from small but important details (ricky leacock was not a cameraman on DLB) to larger points (the filmmaker provides no insight into Dylan.) On the contrary, this is a groundbreaking film that that in fact does not require a sublte palate to appreciate. Technologically, it was the first of its kind. (Pennebaker designed and built the camera himself.) It is the most intimate portrayal of Dylan, possibly of any popular American artist, ever made. And Penneaberk proved that you don't need interviews, narration, and fancy graphics to tell that kind of story. Just patience and interest. The same should be required of the audience. For the reviewer who would prefer that Pennebaker's films report the mundane details like "what drugs ... I had never seen this famous film by D.A. Pennebaker and was really moved by it. It really is like a time capsule from another era and the viewer does feel like a participant in an event in musical history. The sound quality is pretty good considering, and Bob Dylan's heartfelt, soulful performances are wonderful to watch. The impromptu jam sessions in the hotel rooms are amazing! The DVD has some bonus recordings and still photos as well as background info on everyone in the film. Bob Neuwirth and Pennebaker give an entertaining and witty audio commentary.
