I just read the book Roots and am quite convinced it is one of the ten greatest/influential/matter of fact works of literature in American history. Reading the book was hard enough but after watching the film I caught myself in various states of emotion such as fear, anger, humiliation and even shedding a tear. It is hard to comprehend how life must have been for African-Americans during the dark times of slavery. The movie or the book for that matter is not for the weak of heart. After watching the movie it is understandable of why it won all the awards it did. LeVar Burton gives a stunning performance of Kunta Kinte. It is hard to watch LeVar as Geordie LaForge on Star Trek The Next Generation and not have visions of the movie flash thru your head. My family came to America ( both sides ) in 1897 & 1900 from Italy and while my family had nothing to do with slavery it ashames me to be caucasian.Read full review

No matter who you are or which race you are proud to identify with as your heritage, Roots is a must see event. It absorbs you completely by dramatically drawing you into various events and stages in a family’s history. It is unlike any television program before or since. It reaches in and touches your feelings completely. I believe that one’s admiration of the Roots saga could stand as an acid test of one’s appreciation of humanity.
I love this miniseries! The acting and the dialogues are phenomenal. However, there is virtually no conflict ever between any black slaves which is totally unrealitic. However, it's really easy to get past this and enjoy this wonderful bit of drama.
The African-American Student Union on my campus was showing "Roots" for Black History Month, and they needed a copy of the tapes. This was a great event for us, as this series gave us a idea just how hard slave life really was. Everyone should view this miniseries; it will definitely change your outlook on things.
It's a GREAT CLASSIC for any video library! It's a real must have and all the better if you can get it at a reduced price on eBay, because this video series relates for well over $100.00. Our parents loved getting it as a gift - and it is great for the older and younger generations alike.
I remembered viewing the television series and was captivated by it. Having the entire episodes to view over and over again is a bonus. It is a tremendous tale of one family's struggle for freedom and civil rights. Alex Haley has done a significant public service.
