In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today. He frames his account with personal reflections on how his study of the Greek manuscripts made him abandon his once ultraconservative views of the Bible. Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus's words or Saint Paul's writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day. Both mistakes and intentional changes abound in the surviving manuscripts, making the original words difficult to reconstruct. For the first time, Ehrman reveals where and why these changes were made and how scholars go about reconstructing the original words of the New Testament as closely as possible. It was not written in Latin either. ‘The New Testament' was written in Greek and that is just the beginning of the problem in assessing ‘what Jesus actually said and did.’ Exacerbating this task is that there are no original copies of the books of the New Testament. In fact, there are no copies of the originals. In fact, there are no copies of the copies of the copies of the original scriptures. Of the thousands of scriptural manuscripts that do exist, the oldest were written hundreds of years after the Christ lived/died and were copied by scribes, who were often not well trained in their profession ... Later more professional scribes either unintentionally or deliberately altered the documents for 'clarity' or theological ‘purity’ to justify whatever orthodoxy they embraced. The result is tens of thousands of mistakes and contradictions found in scripture---over thirty thousand in the Greek Bible alone and even more than that in the Vulgate---which is the Latin translation from the Greek version. ‘King James;’ is far down the road from both of them---and compounds all those discrepancies. So much for Biblical inerrancy. Ehrman leads the reader on a journey into how the early Christian divisions and the scribes copying those scriptures altered the translations of New Testament. He offers numerous detailed examples supporting his thesis. He explains how current scholars using textual analysis and the history of those early conflicts in Christianity are attempting identify the ‘original text’ of the Book that the largest world religion holds scared. Ehrman concludes by saying: “I began to see that not just the scribal text, but the text itself was a very human book.” Well researched and documented by a scholar who is equally familiar with both “The Book”, its authors, history and the nuances of the languages’ in which it has been written. Highly recommended.

Dr. Bart D. Ehrman is indeed a gifted writer, and world-class textual scholar. Unfortunately "Misquoting Jesus" is not a careful, balanced presentation of the evidence though. It is not so much what Dr. Ehrman does say as what he does not. For example he gripes about how long after the life of Jesus that the New Testament (NT) documents were written. (About 25-60 years after Jesus' death.) But he fails to mention that this is much closer than almost every other historical document from antiquity. He leaves the uninformed reader with all sorts of open-ended questions. The evidence is presented in a way that makes the reader doubt the New Testament's reliability. But, the evidence should bolster ones faith in the NT. Along the way he tells the story of his deconversion from the ... Dr. Bart D. Ehrman is indeed a gifted writer, and world-class textual scholar. Unfortunately Dr. Ehrman, as well as so many other Christians, was under the impression that Christianity rested on the inspiration of the Bible. But, from the start Christianity has been based on the person and work of Jesus Christ. He brings up issues that scholars have been aware of for decades. For example the story of Jesus and the woman who was caught in adultery was likely not in John's original gospel. This is no secret. Scholars have known about it for quite some time. But, Ehrman acts as if he were ringing the bell of truth, letting poor, deluded Christians in on what's been hidden from them. However, no crucial Christian doctrine is found in that story. So what if it's a late addition? I actually recommend that you do read "Misquoting Jesus", but be sure to read the rebuttals to it as well. Books like "Misquoting Truth", "Reinventing Jesus", "Fabricating Jesus", and "Dethroning Jesus" are all excellent critiques (written by scholars) of this book. Examine both sides of the issue, and make your decision.
