Synopsis
In her own singularly beautiful style, Newbery Medal winner Sharon Creech intricately weaves together two tales, one funny, one bittersweet, to create a heartwarming, compelling, and utterly moving story of love, loss, and the complexity of human emotion. Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, proud of her country roots and the "Indian-ness in her blood," travels from Ohio to Idaho with her eccentric grandparents. Along the way, she tells them of the story of Phoebe Winterbottom, who received mysterious messages, who met a "potential lunatic," and whose mother disappeared. As Sal entertains her grandparents with Phoebe's outrageous story, her own story begins to unfold--the story of a thirteen-year-old girl whose only wish is to be reunited with her missing mother.

This is an outstanding seller to deal with. Fair prices that are more than reasonable in this economy. The product is in better condition than described, a true value for my money. Packaged and shipped well shows seller has concern for the products he sells to arrive in excellent condition. The seller is friendly and communicates timely with his customers. I highly recommend this seller and would do business again anytime. Thank you.

  • A bittersweet novel for the middle school set

Mention this book to any middle schooler who has read it, and you get a wistful sigh. Boys and girls alike love this sad, sometimes heartbreaking story about Salamanca Hiddle. She tells the story of a friend, Phoebe Winterbottom, while on a car trip with her grandparents. Along the way, Sal deals with the emotions she is carrying. The book is about loss, but Creech's knack for understanding the emotions of a middle school kid shine in this quirky, loveable novel. Although the reading is easy, this book's audience is hard to place--much like Creech's other books. The style is simple and understandable for fourth to seventh grade, and appeals to kids in all those grade levels. However, Creech's frequent use of flashback can sometimes confuse a struggling reader. This is a new classic ...

  • Fast shipping and item as described!

I bought the book for my cousin to read for school. She thought the book was boring but she read it because her school required her to read during the summer. There is nothing that I did not like about this book because I am not the one who had to read this book. I am not willing to compare this book to other books because I am not the one who read it. I know she told me that she like others books rather than this one.
