Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker, SEX AND THE CITY) has a highly unusual job in this at times cartoonish romantic comedy: she's an interventionist. What this means is that parents of young men who are still living at home well into adulthood can hire her to date their sons, which lends the often troubled men the fortitude to strike out on their own. Trip (Matthew McConaughey) seemingly fits this description perfectly; a 35-year-old extreme sports enthusiast and boat salesman, he uses his living situation to quickly end any relationship that becomes too serious. Trip's doting mother (Kathy Bates) and quirky father (former quarterbackTerry Bradshaw) hire Paula at their friends' adamant recommendation, and she sets about her tried-and-true method of winning Trip over. A few obstacles emerge, however, as Trip's buddy Ace (Justin Bartha) finds out the truth, and must be bribed by a date with Paula's hilariously hostile roommate Kit (Zooey Deschanel). Paula also discovers a few things about Trip's past that make her realize how different he is from the rest of her clients, but just as she begins to develop real feelings for him, disaster strikes.Though somewhat meandering in its plotline, some of the best and funniest moments in FAILURE TO LAUNCH are provided by its supporting cast. Deschanel provides dry, intelligent humor in a subplot involving a mockingbird that's taken up residence outside her window, as well as her courtship by adoring suitor Ace. Bates as usual gives a complex performance, doing much with the part provided for her, while a game Bradshaw is appealing in his eccentricities. The film's somewhat fantastical plot is quickly eclipsed by the charm of the characters, the irresistible slapstick humor, and, in the end, heartwarming sentiment and lessons learned.

Failure to Launch (2006, DVD)
Arguably the best romantic comedy to be released recently has been the smart, witty "Two Weeks Notice" with the heretofore Queen and King of Romantic comedies: Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant. Is "Failure to Launch" (a terrible title, by-the-way) and Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Mc Conaughey up to the level of Bullock and Grant? Yes and No. Yes in that both performers are dazzlingly beautiful and charming and very much fun to watch. And No in that the writing, pacing of "FTL" is no where near as intelligent and strong as "TWN." is With that said, Parker and Mc Conaughey as Tripp and as an extension Kathy Bates as Mc Conaughey's mother and Zooey Deschanel as Parker's loopy roommate are first rate which is a good thing as comedies often rise or fall on the brilliance or lack thereof of the ... The premise of "FTL" is risky in that Parker's character, Paula basically makes men fall in love with and bond with her so that they will move out of their parent's house. But what happens to the men involved when they realize the ruse? Or more to the point when they realize that Paula's not really in love with them? These concerns are never really addressed properly and the film suffers for it. "Failure to Launch" is above average and saved from being a total disaster only by the winning performances of all the actors.

I just sorta want to slap a few people silly for their participation in this shallow, stupid film! Sue (Kathy Bates) and Al (Terry Bradshaw) haven't the spines to tell their 37-year-old son Tripp (Matthew McConaughey) to take responsibility for himself and move out of their home. Instead, they do everything to enable him to stay on despite their complaints and commiserating with their middle-aged peers who also are whining wimps. Seems old Tripp wants to be a child all his life. He can't establish a meaningful relationship with a woman -- heck, he can't establish a meaningful relationship with himself! In all fairness, I must say that I fast fowarded through the last quarter of this film just 'cause I couldn't stand it any longer but wanted to see if there was some -- any -- redeeming quality about it. There wasn't. Of course, if your ambition in life is to see about 30 seconds of Terry Bradshaw's bare behind bouncing around a room, then by all means, fritter away your money on this one.

Now this is a good movie. I love it. You laugh, relate to the parents, love the girl co star to death and her boyfriend is too cute. She is awesome. Matthew and Sarah are perfect for the parts and she is always a good actress and he a good actor. A movie should keep your attention but yet touch your senses and this one does. Did not dilike any part. It's a great movie. This movie is the kind you can watch over and over and not get tired of. I bought because I didn't want to rent. I wanted my own.Now this is a good movie. I love it. You laugh, relate to the parents, love the girl co star to death and her boyfriend is too cute. She is awesome. Matthew and Sarah are perfect for the parts and she is always a good actress and he a good actor. A movie should keep your attention but yet touch your senses and this one does. Did not dilike any part. It's a great movie. This movie is the kind you can watch over and over and not get tired of. I bought because I didn't want to rent. I wanted my own.
