Early Dr. Seuss collection
The reason for the purchase of this book was my personal love of Dr. Seuss. Early in his publishing career, he was unpopular among educators because of his whimsical style -- made up words, rhyming, etc. However, he soon became a favorite and is now a classic children's author and illustrator. This particular book is not a child's book -- it is a collection from the early career of Dr. Seuss, when he wrote and illustrated for humor magazines. He signed his work in those days "Dr. Theophrastus Seuss." This collection is edited by Richard Marshall, and reads like a black-and-white magazine. The sections are: The Essays of Theophrastus Seuss; Dr. Seuss's Little Educational Charts; Boids and Beasties: Piscozooavistical Surveys; Dr. Seuss's Cartoon Collection; and Quick, Henry, the Flit! Insight to the Mind of Dr. Seuss!
This book has been out of print for some time and is getting harder to find. I received my first copy as a Christmas give back in the late 1980s and loved it! I've purchased several other copies through the years as gifts. The author has collected a masterful sampling of Dr. Seuss' early writings and illustrations that give fantastic insight to the mind of a most interesting and peculiar person. You can see the character developing from Theodor Geisel into Dr. Seuss. His college and early work is adult and witty, sarcastic, whimsical and funny. He was adamantly opposed to fascism in the 1930s and it's clear in his output. He was not one to mince words on politics! I would have enjoyed the book even if Geisel had not evolved into Seuss.
