"The most perfectly balanced collection of stories I know... Nine Stories is a book I've gone back to at different moments in my life, and I always find something new. I've passionately loved different stories at different times, first 'Teddy,' later 'For Esmé--with Love and Squalor.' I could list all of them." -- Ann Patchett , Parade

Synopsis
The "original, first-rate, serious, and beautiful" short fiction ( New York Times Book Review ) that introduced J. D. Salinger to American readers in the years after World War II, including "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and the first appearance of Salinger's fictional Glass family. Nine exceptional stories from one of the great literary voices of the twentieth century. Witty, urbane, and frequently affecting, Nine Stories sits alongside Salinger's very best work--a treasure that will passed down for many generations to come. The stories: A Perfect Day for Bananafish Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut Just Before the War with the Eskimos The Laughing Man Down at the Dinghy For Esmé--with Love and Squalor Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period Teddy, The "original, first-rate, serious, and beautiful" short fiction ( New York Times Book Review ) that introduced J. The stories: A Perfect Day for Bananafish Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut Just Before the War with the Eskimos The Laughing Man Down at the Dinghy For Esm --with Love and Squalor Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period Teddy, English summary: Salvatore Romano (1875-1955) was one of the most important art collectors of the early twentieth century. In 1946, as homage to the city that had become his home, he offered his collection to Florence. Romano himself, along with his son, determined the exhibition of the different objects, juxtaposing famous works with pieces by anonymous medieval craftsmen, often from places peripheral to Italy's more noted artistic centers. The detailed descriptions provided in this volume provide a useful guide to the museum and its collection. Appendix with English translation

  • JD Salinger is like no other author I have ever seen

The way he captures the culture and specific moments and displays people throughout his stories are amazing. I honestly have not seen a writer like Salinger my entire life (my english teacher agrees). Just the way he writes and captures specific moments. You can nearly always relate to these. It almost baffles me how he does it. His books are so complex yet simple to read (but sometimes hard to get the "true" meaning out of the story). Absolutely 5 stars, second to none. It is a must read. You may have trouble figuring out the end, and/or the true theme/symbolism of a story, but when you do, i think you will be amazed with it. Watch for even the smallest nuances, they may be crucial.

  • Nine Stories - Salinger

These short stories offer insights into childhood, the passage of time, family relationships, love, betrayal, regret, philosophy, art, and life itself, through the eyes of a wide variety of characters, including a gifted little boy, the mother of an autistic child, a brilliant but unbalanced young man, bickering teenage tennis partners, a psychologically shattered war veteran, and others, as their lives undergo remarkable transformations before our very eyes. I have re-read these stories many times, and I almost always find something new. They are entertaining, provocative, and very wise. They were written mid-20th century, and they feel both timeless and very modern. You will enjoy them. I guarantee it.

  • Don't miss this inexpensive treat!

I have always loved JD Salinger, but my experience was limited to The Catcher in the Rye. I hate to admit I never knew of these short stories until I heard a commentary on NPR. I purchased the collection right away. I absolutely love this shocking collection of short stories. I won't spoil them by telling you of them but I hope you will purchase this book and be both amused and shocked by them. Leave it t JD Salinger to even think up stories like these!
