Director Stephen Hopkins' (LOST IN SPACE) crime thriller is a remake of the 1981 French film GARDE Ŕ VUE, and is adapted from John William Wainwright's novel BRAINWASH. On the evening of the San Sebastian festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico, wealthy tax attorney Henry Hearst (Gene Hackman) is supposed to attend a charity ball with his lovely, much younger wife Chantal (Monica Belluci), but is called to police headquarters. The previous day, during his morning run, Hearst discovered the dead body of a 12-year-old girl. Captain Victor Benezet (Morgan Freeman) and the explosive young Detective Owens (Thomas Jane) say they merely want to clarify some details in Hearst's statement. However, when the questioning begins and Hearst stumbles over his answers, it is evident that the police suspect Hearst is involved. As the interrogation wears on, particulars of the prominent lawyer's personal life, and his complex relationship with his young wife are revealed. On the quest to discover Hearst's innocence or guilt, the film features tense duels between Hearst and Benezet, and an inventive retracing of events leading up to the murder while set against the lovely, exotic backdrop of San Juan.

Don't worry, I'm not about to write a spoiler review. "Under Suspicion" is an American remake of the 1981 French thriller titled "Garde à vue." Both movies deal with the investigation of a prominent citizen who is a suspect in a child murder case, and the police investigator is a friend of the suspect. There are some disturbing images here but no action scenes to horrify viewers. Understand however, this is a film for mature viewers, and one so superbly acted, so filled with powerful nuances addressing the complexities and frailties of human relations, I can't help but wonder why this film didn't receive the major recognition or awards it deserved. Perhaps it was too real, disturbing, or deep, but this highly under-rated film is definitely worth watching if for no other reason than some ... Don't worry, I'm not about to write a spoiler review. Bringing a film like this to life must have been a daunting challenge for the two top dogs in the business, but, if anyone could have done it, Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman would have been the champions of the big screen; together once again. Freeman tried unsuccessfully for many years to produce a remake of the French movie, GARDE à VUE (Claude Miller, 1981) before getting Hackman interested in the project; despite their notoriety, a few more years were required before production actually began, having two major role-players also serving executive producers (Hackman's first attempt and Freeman's 2nd out of 5). "Under Suspicion" will force you to consider the complexity of truth and memory, along with the degree to which psychological trauma and coercion can influence what we know ... I'll never really know how the reasons why I missed this movie in 2000, yet many people around the world reported missing the film the same way I had. We really need to know the history of this film to get a good picture of where this movie is going to go. Without giving away the entire synopsis, let me just add a few comments along the way. Firstly, this script and story where an adaptation of a French Film that was also once a book written in 1979 by John Wainwright called "Brainwash". We find that most of the entire film takes place inside the office of Morgan Freeman at the police station in San Juan. The dialogue plays quite oddly the majority of the time between the two principal characters much like a stage play, however, much of the time, flashbacks intermingle on the screen as the characters re-enact together as if they both had been their as it happened. Much similar in nature to the film SE7EN, this film is dark and dreary, a vision of an ill-lit and illicit milieu, raising far more questions than it answers. Morgan Freeman is playing Victor Benezet, another world-weary detective, swamped by unsolved criminal cases. Although the ending to this film came of a somewhat unbelievable and perplexing to many viewers they may not have felt compassion for Mr. Hearst by the end of interrogation, since most people tend to jump to their own hasty (shooting first, then asking questions later syndrome) conclusions. Thomas Jane gives one of his better performances as the hot-tempered Owens, and Monica Belluci gives a subtle and convincing performance while simultaneously being so unbelievably gorgeous that you can't take your eyes off of her. The direction by Stephen Hopkins is superb--creepy and stylish, the cinematography makes maximum use of San Juan's many settings. I'll give this a 5/5 for mystery, intrigue, and presentation. Much different than I remembered, wife didn't like it.
The first time I saw this movie I remembered how the Police can be so persuasive and persistent that an innocent person is convinced he/she is guilty. That was true, but, there were more devicive activities than I first remembered. It did, however, reinforce my belief that the police are over jealous and take the path of least resistance when investigating a crime. They focus on members of the family and or the person who reported the crime & find or manipulate evidence and the accused to support that flawed theory. All this as the real criminal is getting farther away. I truely believe this. Although this movie is only a movie it does emphasize this behavior very well.
