About this product

Product Information

In the spirit of Steve Jobs and Moneyball, Elon Musk is both an illuminating and authorized look at the extraordinary life of one of Silicon Valley's most exciting, unpredictable, and ambitious entrepreneurs-a real-life Tony Stark-and a fascinating exploration of the renewal of American invention and its new "makers." Elon Musk spotlights the technology and vision of Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur and innovator behind SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity, who sold one of his Internet companies, PayPal, for $1.5 billion. Ashlee Vance captures the full spectacle and arc of the genius's life and work, from his tumultuous upbringing in South Africa and flight to the United States to his dramatic technical innovations and entrepreneurial pursuits. Vance uses Musk's story to explore one of the pressing questions of our age: can the nation of inventors and creators who led the modern world for a century still compete in an age of fierce global competition? He argues that Musk-one of the most unusual and striking figures in American business history-is a contemporary, visionary amalgam of legendary inventors and industrialists including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Howard Hughes, and Steve Jobs. More than any other entrepreneur today, Musk has dedicated his energies and his own vast fortune to inventing a future that is as rich and far-reaching as the visionaries of the golden age of science-fiction fantasy. Thorough and insightful, Elon Musk brings to life a technology industry that is rapidly and dramatically changing by examining the life of one of its most powerful and influential titans.

Reviews
[T]his work will likely serve as the definitive account of a man whom so far we've seen mostly through caricature. By the final pages, too, any reader will sense the need to put comparisons to Steve Jobs aside. Give Musk credit. There is no one like him., The SpaceX and Tesla founder certainly sees setbacks as an unavoidable part of innovation. But a brilliant new biography paints a picture of him as an obsessive, intolerant perfectionist., Mr. Vance tells the stories of both SpaceX and Tesla with intricacy and insight. . . . What does come through is a sense of legitimate wonder at what humans can accomplish when they aim high, and aim weird.|9780062301239|

Very good but out of date..

Well written and researched but minimizes negative experiences of Musk grade school years, and relationship with his father. And, was published in 2015 while Walter Isaacson's book was published in 2023. I read both and suggest reading this one first but if you can only read one, Walter Isaacson's book is more complete.

  • "If you are going through hell, keep going"

Elon Musk is still alive and the book was published in 2015, so it could be argued that this book is "too new" to read as the history has not unfolded yet. However, the book is still relevant as history did not see any private institution doing businesses on this scale either (in fact, this is true for most of the Silicon Valley startups). Books of this sort are usually fairy tales, explaining a superman who is running from success to success with his *unmatched vision*. To some extent, this book has that content, too. But the portrait of the successful man is not as important (and informative) as how that man reacts to the failure: You can find many similar spirited people in the garbage of the history because they didn't know how to respond to severe adversity. Anyone who is interested ...

  • All is Possible -The Master of Optimism

Musk is an optimistic man with a mission who is hell-bent to do his best for America and the world. Like parents who practice tough love on their kids he demands from his employees a can-do attitude on the assumption that what seems "impossible" can be reversed. To hit his target Musk hires those who have graduated at the top of their class at Princeton, MIT, Harvard and Stanford, and go-getters achievers in the field of electrical, mechanical engineering, and rocket science. With Space X the self-sufficient approach to manufacture in-house most of the parts needed enables Musk to sell for less, freedom that NASA and other private companies depending on the Russians and Chinese for parts and equipment, do not enjoy. On top of that Tesla Motors' Model S is considered to be the best car ...
