About this product

Product Information

Based on a true story, MUSIC WITHIN depicts how one man helped change policies and attitudes toward people with disabilities. Richard Pimentel (Ron Livingston) grew up with an emotionally unstable mother (Rebecca De Mornay) and lost his father in a freak accident, so he turns to public speaking in school to find direction in life and seek the approval and praise he needs. After receiving insightful advice from a public speaking mentor (Hector Elizondo), Richard enlists in the army and serves in Vietnam. He returns with impaired hearing and finds it difficult to get a job. Through friendships with Art (Michael Sheen), who has cerebral palsy, and fellow Vietnam vets with various ailments, Richard finds his calling as an employment placement advocate for those with disabilities. Catching the attention of the state governor, his innovative work leads to a breakthrough opportunity: to write the training program for employers and government agencies to improve conditions, hire, and retain employees with disabilities. His efforts ultimately result in the creation of the congressionally approved Americans with Disabilities Act.MUSIC WITHIN impeccably fulfills its mission to inform as it entertains, as it seriously explores this sensitive subject but never loses its sense of humor when dealing with the issues. Livingston (OFFICE SPACE) is perfectly cast as Richard; his earnest Everyman style inspires, and his deadpan comic timing adds warmth to a story that showcases how cold people can be. Sheen (THE QUEEN) is a marvel as the brilliant and witty wheelchair-bound Art. Their chemistry is spellbinding and their characters' unique relationship is the heartbeat of this endearing film.

    The Music Within

Michael Sheen steals the film, as usual. Engaging story that could have been made for tv if not for language. True story of the man who helped others with disabilities be accepted into the workplace while providing training for employers. Sheen has supporting role as friend with cerebral palsy. Lead actor is good but somewhat unbelievable.

  • I went to College with the Wonderful Art Honeyman

I went to college with Art Honeyman. He was an amazing person. You have to understand that he could not walk, hold a pen, eat by himself or dress himself because of his CP. Yet he was able to complete college and go for his masters. He wrote many poems and books. When he was a child, his father sent him out to sell light bulbs. He sat in his cart and used his legs to move about and go door to door. Talk about abuse and bullying!!! Other kids called him names and threw objects and eggs at him. It never stopped him. In the movie, the pivotel scene concerned an abusive waitress who kicked Art out of a pancake house quoting the then called "ugly law". This also happened to me and Art. When I was 21, Art took me to Farrel's Ice Cream Parlor in Portland for my birthday. We had just ...

  • Music Within dvd

First, let's get the language issue out of the way- There is, in fact, some vulgar language interspersed throughout this film- However,it is never used in the context of sex, only as slang communication- That said, this is one terrific film, in that it shows the difference an ordinary person can make in the life of others- It is based on the true story of a man that was discarded by his mother, yet used that obstacle to love the unlovely around him- I've heard it said that when one faces the pressures and toughness of life's challenges, he can respond in only one of two ways- He can get bitter or he can get better- We can certainly use the message of this movie to inspire us to make other's lives better when we face the bitter issues of life- I highly recommend this film if you have ...

  • Great Movie

This film shows that even those that you think cant or are unable can do what others can do if given the chance. In this day and age why should we treat those with a disability different and make them dependent on the system? Wouldn't it make more sense to have them contribute to society? Then they become tax paying contributors of society, and maybe we wouldn't need so many programs that take care of people for the rest of their lives. And what about the vets coming back from Iraq with physical disabilities? Do we put them away someplace after what they have given? Or do we help them become members of the community again and do something meaningful.

  • Inspirational movie with a purpose and humor!

Humorous spin on a serious topic. Richard is a wonderful character (still is) that has a story that should be told. A Vietnam vet that lost his hearing and turned his wit and disability into a life-long campaign that eventually led to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. I had the pleasure of attending a training session with him this month - what a great American! A very inspiring movie for all.
