Definitely a Sophomore Effort
Kevin Rudolf's first album, "In the City," absolutely blew me away in both its content and its musical scope. Here was an artist who had finally blended rock and rap without sounding like the rap-rock tones of House of Pain or Linkin Park. Indeed, Rudolf's style was more akin to rock-influenced rap--an artist who had trained on guitar but also appreciated the lyrical stylings of hip-hop. All things considered, Rudolf's second album, "To the Sky," is a sophomore effort in every sense of the term. Gone are the rock and roll-infused tracks that made Rudolf so different from other pop artists on the scene. Instead, listeners are greeted with more traditional pop-rap songs that differ significantly from Rudolf's first album. The first single, "I Made It," is downright awful, but is thankfully ... Kevin Rudolf's first album, "In the City," absolutely blew me away in both its content and its musical scope. The rest are radio-friendly pop with a few attempts at harder rap ("Spit in Your Face," "Late Night Automatic") thrown in for good measure. For the most part, the tracks with Lil' Wayne and Three-Six Mafia are nearly as bad as "I Made It" and the rest are just...disappointing. In all, Kevin Rudolf needs to pick up his guitar again and get back to the kind of music that made him so dynamic in the first place. Thanks for reading.
