The book is an introduction to compound sawing, which the author describes as a technique of making two cuts on one pattern to create a three-dimensional piece. The patterns are presented so they can be cut out and adhered directly to 1-1/2" stock. The chess set designs include a woodworker's set with the pieces resembling a saw, drill bit, hammer, pliers, screwdriver and screws. There's also instruction for making a chessboard. The book was fine,...... look at the style of patterns and if they speak to you, make the purchase. Check out Jim Kape's book on the same subject.
First the Book is fine and delivers on what it subject matter suggest. My issue (and I admit it is my on personal issue) is that I had already purchased "Making Wooden Chess Sets: 15 One-of-a-Kind Projects for the Scroll Saw" by Jim Kape (I am not endorsing this item, just trying to place my review in proper perspective). I purchased the current book thinking it would expand on my original book in regards to techniques and/or patterns, but "for me" it did not deliver on either. Had I purchased this book first, I am sure I would have been more than happy with the content and the value of the purchase. In short, if this is your first book about chess pieces by with confidence (not I am going to make an endorsement), however if you find both books and they are the same price, I would go ... I do think Jim's book does pass along a few more tips to help you achieve professional results out of the gate. If you have used a scroll saw in the past those tips are probably not going to provide as much value to you as it did a newbie like me. Again, I do not regret my purchase and for some it may contain the exact style of pattern that you are looking for,.... it just was not the book for me.
