About this product

Product Information

Many consider the Battle of Midway to have turned the tide of the Pacific War. It is without question one of the most famous battles in history. Now, for the first time since Gordon W. Prange's bestselling Miracle at Midway , Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully offer a new interpretation of this great naval engagement. Unlike previous accounts, Shattered Sword makes extensive use of Japanese primary sources. It also corrects the many errors of Mitsuo Fuchida's Midway: The Battle That Doomed Japan , an uncritical reliance upon which has tainted every previous Western account. It thus forces a major, potentially controversial reevaluation of the great battle. Parshall and Tully examine the battle in detail and effortlessly place it within the context of the Imperial Navy's doctrine and technology. With a foreword by leading World War II naval historian John Lundstrom, Shattered Sword is an indispensable part of any military buff's library. Shattered Sword is the winner of the 2005 John Lyman Book Award for the "Best Book in U.S. Naval History" and was cited by Proceedings as one of its "Notable Naval Books" for 2005.

"Will earn its place in the already impressive library that focuses on one of the great moments in naval history."-- Naval Institute Proceedings, "To really know about the Battle of Midway, you must read this book."--John B. Lundstrom, author of The First Team: Pacific Naval Air Combat from Pearl Harbor to Midway  , "While most of their predecessors have fallen into the same mold--looking at the battle from the American vantage only--Parshall and Tully break new ground in bringing the Japanese perspective into the picture. . . . The authors state that their book attempts to do three things--present the battle from the Japanese side, study it almost exclusively from an aircraft carrier viewpoint, and point out the errors and exaggerations in a group of myths that have surrounded the battle. The authors succeed in all three goals. . . . [They] have produced a superb volume."-- Journal of Military History, "Will earn its place in the already impressive library that focuses on one of the great moments in naval history."-- Naval Institute Proceedings  , "A fascinating, unique, and groundbreaking study on the Japanese and American sides of the encounter with emphasis on the former . . . Shattered Sword is well written, spectacularly and thoroughly researched and vividly narrated, and is fast becoming the definitive tome on the legendary naval battle." --Journal of Australian Naval History  , "To really know about the Battle of Midway, you must read this book."--John B. Shattered Sword is well written, spectacularly and thoroughly researched and vividly narrated, and is fast becoming the definitive tome on the legendary naval battle." --Journal of Australian Naval History, "This incredible book shatters all previous notions on how the Battle of Midway was fought. It also shatters all the standards for military reference works. SHATTERED SWORD will come to be regarded as a benchmark in modern history, for it brings to bear all the tools of modern communication technology in a way that has never been done before. [It] utterly refutes the conclusions of most of the previous accounts of the battle. . . . This book is a page turner, but its importance and its wealth of detail will deman an immediate re-reading." --Walter J. Boyne, former director of the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum and author of BEYOND THE WILD BLUE: A HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE, 1947-1997, "This meticulously researched and thoroughly documented study is an essential corrective. It is essential reading for anyone interested in carrier aviation, past, present, or future. Although imposing in scale, Shattered Sword is a bargain, and a highly engaging read. Every page seems to throw up a new perspective--from the pathetically low Japanese aircraft production figures, to the political infighting both within the Naval High Command and between the services. The best naval history book of 2005."-- Naval Review, "This meticulously researched and thoroughly documented study is an essential corrective. Extensively researched, soundly reasoned, and engagingly and colorfully written, Shattered Sword is the most original piece of scholarship on this decisive event since John B. Lundstrom's groundbreaking The First Team."-- Robert J. Cressman, editor and principal author of A Glorious Page in Our History: The Battle of Midway, "Get this book. Parshall and Tully have pulled off what every author/historian aspires to do: take the body of literature on a chosen topic to a level of insight and understanding not formerly attained or perhaps even imagined. . . . Shattered Sword can justifiably be labeled a ground breaker, a landmark work that belongs at eye-level center in any naval historian's bookcase."-- Naval History, "While most of their predecessors have fallen into the same mold--looking at the battle from the American vantage only--Parshall and Tully break new ground in bringing the Japanese perspective into the picture. . . . Excellent! Retrostar Music is a very fair seller - they gave me a 5% discount on top of an already great price! They also communicated the status of my order quite frequently. The CD I ordered came in a box with plenty of wrapping paper to ensure it would not get beaten up in shipping. Usually sellers just send CDs in envelopes, so I was pleasantly surprised when this arrived in a box. The CD itself is in perfect condition. A+ experience! I would highly recommend this seller!

"Moneyball" is an old/new movie/DVD that I haven't seen. "Retrostar Music" as seller had some of Mr. Pitts movies & this was labelled "New", I decided to purchase it. The seller sent all I ordered with FREE shipping &discounted the price of all as well. It took less than a week - six days - for my complete order to arrive & they were all carefully packaged & arrived in two boxes. If I ever have a question regarding what else is in the seller's inventory, I always receive a very prompt reply.

    A Must Read

The quintessential history of the battle of Midway. A must read before seeing the new movie "Midway" (2019). Many myths have arisen about this turning point in the war in the Pacific, this book shines a light on what actually happened. Made all the more poignant with the discovery last week of 2 of the 4 IJN aircraft carriers sunk during the battle.

  • A definitive work on Japan's defeat at Midway

It's hard to know where to begin with this book, but the bottom line is this: it is the comprehensive and definitive guide to the Japanese side of the Battle of Midway. It omits almost nothing, covering every aspect of the Japanese side from the youngest casualty of the battle (a 16-year-old) to Japanese aircraft launching and damage control procedures. The central point of this book is to deflate and defeat the myths about Midway, that the Japanese outnumbered the Americans immensely at the point of contact (they didn't), that poor Japanese scouting led to their critical indecision (it didn't), or that the American torpedo planes from VT-8 sacrificed themselves to enable the dive bombers to score the great victory (they certainly didn't). After reading the book, you retain your ...

  • The Battle of Midway in Amazing Detail

Definitive account of the Battle of Midway. Extensive research went into this book. A detailed account of what occurred before, during, and after the battle. In the book you will find the names of not only the senior officers, junior officers, but those of the enlisted men that were there on both sides of the battle. You read the accounts of the sinking of all four of the Japanese carriers and the sinking of one American carriers. Extensive detail is given for the reasons for the failure of the Japanese battle force, and the reasons for the success of the American forces. Even the Appendixes are full of information.

  • Excellent, top tier study.

This is an excellent and highly detailed study of a pivotal battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II. I have many volumes studying this era and this battle in particular. This is the best I’ve found for either the reader with a general interest or an expert.

This is a look at one of the critical battles of World War 2 with new detailed analyses. It looks at the battle from the Japanese perspective. It is extremely well written and very readable. I highly recommend it.
