I was about nine years old when The Australian Women's Weekly serialised 4.50 From Paddington by Agatha Christie. Already hooked on the printed word, from the back of cereal boxes to the articles and short stories in Mum's weekly magazine, it seemed a natural progression to follow the serial they published. What a revelation! Right away I was fascinated by her characters. They lived for me,except the body, of course, but it was real. Here was a new world for a little girl living on a country farm in Australia! Over the years I read all of her books, constantly marvelling at the diversity of characters and settings, but pleased to meet some old friends, too. This book of plays by Agatha Christie demonstrates some of this diversity, with some of them being fore-runners of novels, and some based on a novel already written. I know some critics consider this type of writing to be not worthy of much praise, but I find it relaxing and interesting without being heavy going. The Mousetrap would not have broken records for its long run if it had no merit at all! To find all her plays in one volume was for a fan like myself a gift. Many years later I still read every night. I re-read Agatha Christie from time to time and regret how many times I gave away her books, thinking I would never wish to read it again. Now I have decided I want a copy of every one on the book case! No collection of Agatha Christie would be complete with The Mousetrap and Other Plays. My first copy was acquired at the local flea market fot $2. What a thrill! But in a lapse of judgement I lent it to someone who I trusted. I am sure Agatha is somewhere watching and saying to herself that it reminded Miss Marple of a mistake made by one of the villagers or one of her family. So that brings me to why I purchased this copy. I KNOW it is an intresting read. It will live on my book case or my bedside table, to be re-visited when the fancy takes me. I will highly recommend that anyone wishing to borrow it buy their own copy because it is worth owning.Read full review
