About this product

Product Information

The Autobiography of Henry VIII is the magnificent historical novel that established Margaret George's career. Evocatively written in the first person as Henry VIII's private journals, the novel was the product of fifteen years of meticulous research and five handwritten drafts. Much has been written about the mighty, egotistical Henry VIII: the man who dismantled the Church because it would not grant him the divorce he wanted; who married six women and beheaded two of them; who executed his friend Thomas More; who sacked the monasteries; who longed for a son and neglected his daughters, Mary and Elizabeth; who finally grew fat, disease-ridden, dissolute. Now, in her magnificent work of storytelling and imagination Margaret George bring us Henry VIII's story as he himself might have told it, in memoirs interspersed with irreverent comments from his jester and confident, Will Somers. Brilliantly combining history, wit, dramatic narrative, and an extraordinary grasp of the pleasures and perils of power, this monumental novel shows us Henry the man more vividly than he has ever been seen before.

  • Excellent Read!

I first read this book when it originally was published and absolutely loved it. In fact, I recommended it to everyone I knew. I don't remember how I came upon it, but I was fascinated with the idea of learning more about Henry VIII in an entertaining way such as this. The length of this book is what makes it so much fun. Often when I find a good book, it's over way too soon. Not so with The Autobiography of Henry VIII. Additionally, I didn't know much about this King except what everyone knows--that he had two of his wives killed and that he was not an empathetic character. Not true. Being able to see things (albeit, this is fiction) from his point of view made him very empathetic. And, I learned that the people loved this King for much of his reign. Margaret George's story made this ...

  • Fascinating!

Anyone who can write a book as long as Ms. George and still keep the reader fully engaged in the story has some serious writing talent! And Margarat George is certainly a brilliant writer. Of course it helps if the subject you are writing about is as complicated twisted and dramatic as Henry VIII's life was, but the ease of reading this confused story is 100% attributable to the writer. She really brings the characters of his story to life and gives them warm blood, as opposed to the cold stiff tales told by many historians. Even though some of the situations were obviously fictional dialogue it was still based on reality and truly animates the life and times of Henry the VIII. I have read several books about his life, Anne Boleyn, Katherine of Aragon, Thomas More, etc. etc. and this ...

  • Fact & Fiction in Perfect Harmony

This fictional autobiography of Henry VIII is fabulous. It is told through the eyes of Will Sommers, his fool, in a letter to one Henry VIII's illegitimate children. It is a fascinating blending of fact and fiction. It fills in gaps in fact with rich and thoughtful whatifs. I found that I could almost believe that it was ALL fact in not for the author's fiction acknowledgments. I really enjoy how it is written at time from Henry's point of view. The author gives the read the gift of "being the fly on the wall" in a fascinating and pivotal time in history.

  • Historical fiction at its best

One of my all-time favorite books! A clever premise, well researched, and well written.

  • a great read

I absolutely loved this book. I am a big fan of the Tudor times, and read anything I can get my hands on, fiction or non-fiction. It was refreshing to read a fiction novel from the point of view of Henry, as I believe he is one of the most misunderstood figures in history. I recommend this book highly. It is a lengthy novel, but well worth the time to read it. I acutally could not put it down once I started to read it.
