THE DEVILS is a tour de force in Russell's inimitable style and his best film ever in my opinion. (Women in love a close second). Visually dense and highly imaginative, with superlative performances by REED and REDGRAVE and company. I received my dvd in only a few days and the price was exceptional! it plays in all regions and is in English. I do not know if it contains the deleted crucifixion scene as of yet. I am very happy with MULTIPLUS' service and price.

    A MAD Masterpiece!!!!

Filmmaker Ken Russell pulls no punches in this blistering film based on actual events in European Loudun in the 1600s. Oliver Reed is almost a force of nature in his performance as Father Urbain Grandier, a flawed man of the cloth with a worldly lust for power and the pleasures of the flesh, and finally able to see the error of his ways and truly repent. The performance is electric, almost jumping off the screen. You see the true endeavors of the man from arrogant womanizer to the penitent victim of a conspiracy between the church and state and finally to martyr. Grandier's popularity and the power that the now-deceased Governor of Loudun bestowed on him make him a target of those conspiring to tear down Loudun's fortifications and to rid themselves of this willful thorn in their sides. ...

  • You have to know the story behind it to understand it.

The film is based on the book "Devils of Loudon" and describes how Granier, a rogue priest, was tried and executed as possessing nuns and worshipping Satan for political reasons. It is the early European version of the Salem Witch trials.

  • A Feast of Devils

While certainly a product of the Sixties it is an extraordinary visual treat with sets by Derek Jarman and photography by David Watkins. Oliver Reed gives his greatest performance as Pere Grandiet, a man conflicted by his role as a priest, his earthly desires and as the de facto leader of the city of Loudon. Vanessa Redgrave as the Abbess is hampered a bit by an underwritten role but certainly gives it her all, if sometimes a bit too much. Agree with it or not, it is certainly engaging if sometimes way over the top.

  • Great, zany movie!

Great, zany movie! Don't understand why it was censored. I just don't believe in censoring books or movies. Reminds me of an old movie called, "Mark of the Devil", and very similar to the movie based on witch hunts. Yes, there were controversial scenes, but this is what makes a movie more interesting.
