About this product

Product Information

After the entire Northern Hemisphere is destroyed by a nuclear war, a group of survivors in Australia prepare for their own inevitable demise. As a deadly cloud of radiation creeps toward the continent, some survivors cling to hopes that life as they know it has continued somewhere, hopes that are fed by the discovery of a mysterious, erratic radio signal emanating from San Diego. Others, such as Astaire's sardonic, race-car driving physicist and Gardner's world-weary, tippling party girl, throw their energies into squeezing the last drops from their lives. A grim, unflinching clarion call for sanity that inches along at a maddeningly deliberate and suspenseful pace. Based on the novel by Nevil Shute. Academy Award Nominations: 2, Best Editing (Frederic Knudtson) and Best Score (Ernest Gold).

  • Made Dad Happy

Got this for my 95 year old, Marine Veteran father. He had been searching for the movie for a number of years and wanted it in VHS (even though he has and uses a dvd player). I was glad to find this listing. The price was very reasonable, the tape was in the original box and packaged for shipment like it was a Faberge egg. Dad has watched it 3 times since I gave it to him a week ago and I suspect it will stay in the VCR so he can watch it whenever Mom cedes control of the TV.

  • "Waltzing Matilda"

Believe it or not, many of us were actually scared living through the 1950's. That was way before 911, BTW. The book, of which the movie is based, by Nevil Shute, was required reading for High Schoolers. If you want to toast this old world goodbye, then why not gather together all your drinking buddies, put this movie on the flat screen mini theatre, and drink up, me lads! Throughout you will hear the once popular song, "Waltzing Matilda", and you won't need to buy any CD to hear that old tune. This creepy movie is about how some folks are affected by the reality that a nuclear weapon can end it all, so watch the amuzing ways in which various key characters react. Then decide to whom you can equate to. Well done.

  • on the beach

This classic film represents a normal population's reaction to a threat that is as real today as it was 50 years ago when the original movie was made. The plot depicts an accurate portrayal of individuals different reactions to their imminent destruction. What would you do under those circumstances? This great film will never be out-dated !!
