A network switch like the Hewlett Packard ProCurve J9280A rack-mountable managed switch is a computer networking module that connects various devices together on a computer network. This type of unit uses packet switching in order to receive, process, and then forward various data to a destination device. The Hewlett Packard ProCurve J9280A rack-mountable managed switch is an advanced network hub that only forwards data to one or more devices that need to receive it rather than using the method of simpler models, which merely broadcast the same data out of each of their ports. Network switches are multi-port network bridges that use hardware addresses to forward and process data at the second layer of the data link in the open systems interconnection (OSI) model. Ethernet switches are the most common type, and the first Ethernet switch was produced in 1990 by Kalpana. There are also other forms of networks that exist, including asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), fibre channel, and InfiniBand. Managed switches have one or more methods that allow users to modify the operation of the switch according to their needs.
