  • Infidel

This was a story of a muslim girl growing up under very strict muslim rules and way of life. It was a real eye-opener as to the extreme control these people live under. I had no idea that there was so much control over every little element of their lives and how the whole clan was involved to "protect their honor". The brutality (beatings, excision of girls, etc.) was hard to imagine that this still goes on today. It seems that that way of thinking causes them to be stuck back in the dark ages. I think the poverty, lack of education, the over-indoctrination, lack of personal freedom and respect for the individual all contributes to this oppressive and hopeless way of life. The author went through tremendous persecution while growing up and due to shere determination, rose above it all to ...

  • Infedel

I needed this book for a Christian book club I participate in. "Infidel" is a thought provoking report on the life of the author. Ayaan Hirsi Ali suffered greatly at the hands of those who loved her all her life, in the name of her Islam faith. She struggled with the truths of Islam about the oppression of women. And, unlimately she feared for her life as she denounced that faith. As a Christian, I had almost no knowledge of Islam before reading this book. Our book club had a very interesting discussion about Islam, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali's life. What we will be doing with the information we now have is the question. I will be praying for the women trapped in the Islam faith, and looking for opportunities to let Muslim women know their is a loving "GOD" that sent His only begotten son ...

  • Insight into Islam

This is a must read if you are serious about knowing what is going on with Islam. AHA does a great job in telling her life story, but more than that, she gives you and insight that only a person who has lived in both the Islamic world and the west can give. Her most important message (IMHO) is "social change can only exist where women are fully functioning members of society". She offers that women, the educators of youth, are seen being mistreated while the children, particularly the boys, observe this mistreatment and think it is the right and proper way to treat women. This is what them see as normal, thus grow up and perpetuate this treatment to women in their lives. This is a sad commentary on Islam. Further, she seeks the Islamic Reformation, just as Christians had a ...

  • A stirring, well-written autobiography

"Infidel" is the best book I have read in a long time. In telling the compelling story of her rigid Muslim upbringing and escape from an arranged marriage, the author makes a solid and heart-wrenching case for better treatment of women in the Islamic world. Horrific problems such as genital mutilation of women and "honor" killings stain the reputation of the Islamic world, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali speaks from first-hand experience in denouncing these atrocities. One of the most interesting parts of the book is her account of the first days of her freedom after escaping to the Netherlands. Once she discards her Muslim headscarf, she is astounded that no one pays any particular attention to her. Males do not approach her to ask for sexual favors because she is uncovered. People treat her ...
