About this product

Product Information

Wonderful wide-plank floors, paned sash windows, an old brick fireplace, the charm of living with a home's small imperfections and making them a virtue. These are just some examples of what makes up a Shabby Chic home. When she first saw what would be her future home, Rachel Ashwell, founder of the Shabby Chic line, was put off by its dark, witchy exterior, gloomy interior, and overgrown garden. But for weeks afterward, she couldn't get the house out of her mind. She went back, took a closer look, and started to see the charm that lay hidden beneath the surface. Excited by the challenge, she bought the house and went to work on it. Inspired by the original design of the 1920s house, Rachel was able to transform it into her bright, cozy dream home, one that had the hallmarks of a Shabby Chic home: a practical amount of space, a relaxed atmosphere, and a comfortable beauty. Through simple instructions and detailed before-and-after photographs, Rachel reveals her decorating and entertaining secrets. Even the most apprehensive novices will learn how to incorporate Shabby Chic style into their everyday life and home. Using her home as an example, Rachel shows you how to assess what needs to be replaced (in her home it was the dark tile in the pool and the bathroom doorknobs), make small structural changes (she exchanged a glass window for a glass door), and keep costs down while adding personal Shabby Chic touches. The gray marble countertop in the guest bathroom and the somewhat noisy glass-front refrigerator were fixtures she would have never chosen, but she left them alone and was pleasantly surprised by the character they added. In her previous books, Rachel showed you how to recognize beauty in overlooked places. Now, in The Shabby Chic Home, she teaches you how to find it in the nooks and crannies of your own home and then apply it to everyday life. She reveals how work, love, a lot of white paint, and Shabby Chic details can turn any new house into a comfortable, functional, beautifully designed home.

  • Rachel Ashwell's special home

This book will inspire you to add color, vintage items and comfort to your own home. I like the fact that she loves flowers and can take a beautiful vintage piece and make it her own by finding a new and different way to use it. Comfort and joy can be found in all her books and I love the way I feel while looking at her pictures. It makes me want to get up and start searching for that special item that someone has discarded and see what I can do with it as she has done. When you buy vintage you are preserving a bit of history that is fading away. Grow some flowers! Find that special item of furniture and everytime you walk by it, be proud. Patricia Taylor

  • The Shabby Chic Home by Rachel Ashford

I bought this book because I am a huge fan of the Shabby Chic decorating style, and I thought this book would be a good source of useful ideas and I was right! There are numerous pictures, with narration by Rachel Ashford. I find it an enjoyable ways to see the Shabby Chic style, and get decorating ideas of my own from it. Other books I've gotten had too few pictures and too much writing; kind of tedious. this book has been a pleasure.

  • Shabby Chic at its finest

I have no doubt that if it is something inspired by Rachel Ashwell I no doubt will find it inspirational in my never ending home decorating. While even her older books such as this one can be a bit outdated, the general idea of Shabby Chic is nonethe less prevalent and very useful for getting ideas. This is the 2nd copy I have purchased,I am not home for a few months and purchased this one to use while away. I own the 3 books in one also which is really quite nice. Anyone who favors this decor, these books are simply a must have.

  • A must read!

Great photos, descriptions, decorating ideas, re-purposing and refinishing techniques, etc. A must read for the bargain hunter and shabby enthusiast in all of us. It was so good I read it in a weekend and couldn't put it down. I've taken a lot of the information from this book and used it when decorating and accessorizing my home and have received a lot of complements! Totally worth the money no matter if you get it for dirt cheap or pay the cover price. I purchased three and gave them as Christmas gifts. They were a big hit!

  • Very Inspirational

I love Shabby Chic and all it stands for. I am trying to slowly turn my home into Shabby Chic. This book is very inspirational. I realise in a lot of books they show picture perfect rooms that look like they are only for show, nothing that show the daily wear of the furniture. This book thought me how a home without clutter is still very much a home and things that are used daily wouldn't look so bad with some creative organizing.
