About this product

Product Information

Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's short story collection is brought to digital life in The Witcher, a single-player action RPG starring a monster hunter named Geralt. Players control the silver-haired Geralt in a fantasy world where dwarves, elves, and humans live in bitter seclusion and monsters roam freely. To defeat these creatures, Geralt can perform a variety of sword-swinging attacks from one of three switchable stances: fast, heavy, and group.

Geralt can also use magic by conjuring up one of five mystical "signs," allowing him to blind, paralyze, or even incinerate foes. A total of 250 skills are available, allowing players to create distinct character builds for specific combat styles. Geralt can supplement his attacks by creating potions, oils, and bombs with varying effects. Acquired recipes are used to create most concoctions, but players can also experiment by mixing ingredients at the risk of poisoning Geralt.

In a twist from typical games in the genre, combat employs a timing-based system, where attacks are initiated each time an onscreen icon appears. Another distinguishing characteristic is The Witcher's emphasis on decision-making throughout the story. Players consistently make choices with no clear right or wrong answer, and these decisions will ultimately have repercussions later in the game. Developed by Poland' s CD Projekt, The Witcher is powered by a modified version of BioWare's Aurora engine, previously used in Neverwinter Nights.

    Disappointed

Installed twice. Once basic, once custom, neither installation worked. Game will not play. Keeps asking for the original CD. Can't register, gives an error code. Can't update, as the software is no longer supported. So I've wasted both time and money. Very disappointed.

  • A Witchin Good Time

The Witcher is a hybrid RPG based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski. It uses the Aurora engine from the Neverwinter Nights game. With 3 different POV this game has a perspective for everyone. It seems to be a fairly standard game with a few interesting twists. The player has the choice of choosing 3 different combat styles- each of which is suitable for different types of combat. A strong style for heavily armormed enemies, fast style for lightly armored, and a group style for many weaker enemies. During a fight there will be an on screen cue to link attacks into a series of combos which cause more damage. Other features include a standard potion making/alchemy kit and a dialogue effected plot line. However unlike many RPG's there usually is no good/evil dialogue choice but rather ...

  • Lots of fun in a little box

I couldn't give this an "excellent" rating because the game play is a little quirky and the in game tutorial should have been a lot better. However, I would have given it a "great" rating if there was one. The camera control is a little odd either in isometric view (even the manual doesn't suggest this view) or over the shoulder (You don't feel like the attack is coming from you but another guy just behind you and off to the right). Once you get used to controlling your character you will have to figure out the many features the game has to offer pretty much on your own since the in game "tutorial" is very limited. That being said this is a VERY fun game. You do get used to the controls pretty quickly and once you figure everything out the game really starts to be enjoyable. The graphics ...

  • Witcher Review

The Witcher is a very fun role playing game where you play a monster slayer using alchemy & various weapons. It is quite challenging even when set to easy mode. The only thing that I didn't like about it is the way you navigate your character and the confusing camera angels. That really got on my nerves when trying to fight battles. It would have been a whole lot better to make it a first person view from the character's eyes rather than an over the shouler view. Also, the point and click way of moving the character was tedious and cumbersome. This could have been a really great game if these things were fixed. I was expecting character navigation similar to Fate or Morrowind.

  • Fun game, with some buts

The original game (or so-called non-enhanced version) does have multiple bugs in it that were addressed by patches, and works just fine. The latest patch on the Atari site is 1.4 - which takes the normal, older retail version and makes it into the full retail Enhanced Edition. The difference in graphics, game play, etc, are astounding. But... Unlike the original version, 1.4 does NOT play nice with Windows XP 64bit - the patcher, as it is downloaded, will not work, period. Fortunately, there are two workarounds posted on the game support forums, and the patch, once extracted, does work. But... Once fully patched and installed, the game still won't work under XP64. However, it does seem to run just fine under Windows7 (beta). So there was some light in the darkness. As for the ...
