    Out of date

    Unfortunately, the content of this book is about 15 years old. I didn't realize there would be such a difference between this book and the up-to-date version. It does cover basics, but does not go into depth like I wish it did. Also, the language style is out of date. The way people speak constantly changes (try understanding your child or grandchild, for example). Modern speech in Japan has changed, and it becomes obvious if you watch anime as I do. This book was OK as I got it at a clearance price. But if I had known it was going to be such a difference, I would have spent the extra money for the current version of the book. Stay away from the older version copies. Pay the extra for the up-to-date versions. Not recommended.

    Good book for readers looking to only learn the speaking side of Japanese.

    This book is great for someone that only really wants to learn spoken Japanese. It is formatted in "romaji" which is Japanese typed in an English Alphabet. It's not true to the language but it's easy to read for those not interested in learning the actual Japanese alphabets. The Japanese in this book is not outdated as someone mentioned. It teaches a non-casual way of speaking -masu form, etc., which foreigners should be using with Japanese people, until they tell them "dude, no need to be so formal". Then you can speak casual Japanese, which this book touches too. For the people saying this book doesn't talk like anime. Most people don't talk like they do in anime. No one runs around saying "dattebayo". That's not a thing. Please stop equating Anime to real life. lol Contains: Grammar, ...

    Japanese for Dummies

    Although this book is old it is still very good. It teaches the basics and is a great way to find out if you would like to continue learning Japanese. The cd helps so you can hear how the words sound and it helps a great deal; at least it did for me. I recommend this book to anyone who is curious about learning Japanese.

    DO NOT BUY THIS!

    This is a really bad book because it does not show the actual Japanese Kana; only Romaji letters. There are better books then this very misleading lie of a book. Don't buy it!
