Some fine moments, but not his best album
I’m a dedicated Mark Knopfler fan, one who listens to his music all the time, so it pains me to declare this new release the weakest of his solo efforts. It does have its pleasures, but overall the album is a disappointment compared to previous work. I should make clear that I’m not one of those throwback Dire Straits fans who won’t be satisfied unless Knopfler returns to the rockin’ good old days. I’m fine with his mellow, even mournful approach in the solo career. (He doesn’t help the cause by pandering to the die-hards by playing greatest hits every time he goes on tour, sacrificing the latest release’s new material and more sensitive work from his solo career.) But this new album lacks the many high points found on previous albums, and its somewhat monotonous quality results from ... But this new album lacks the many high points found on previous albums, and its somewhat monotonous quality results from tunes that vary too little from one to the next, as if one kind of mood and tempo dominated his musical life at the time of recording. Settling into that quiet mood isn’t entirely a bad thing, of course. Counting the highlights, my own favorites are “The Fizzy and the Still,” “We Can Get Wild,” and “Punish the Monkey”, all of them beautifully sung and played with distinctive tunes to propel them. None of these reaches a fast tempo or urgency, so don’t expect to rock out here, gang. The final track, In the Sky, is the longest one and the least eventful number here. There’s certainly more than a hint of exhaustion or just unrelieved melancholy. The lyrics are generally good, literate and thoughtful, even complex and ironic at turns. His singing is confident and more up-front in the mix, though he still trails off with some words at times, unwilling to invest them with too much force. None of the songs can be counted as a loser in melody, either, and it’s only right we enjoy the guitar work. Twang and tremolo (is that the right term?) in the guitar sound that dominates here harkens back to “Summer of Love” and “Atlantis,” songs that were great enough to be included in one of his regular albums but instead wound up in a netherworld of side projects or outtakes. His guitar playing is always a pleasure, but too restrained and simplistic in coloring the latest tunes. No lengthy instrumental finishes to the songs this time around, either, unlike previous albums where that was a staple. Heck, Knopfler has made it clear over the years that he’ll do as he pleases, and I’m fine with that creative integrity and commitment to a personal vision. But I think it’s time he mixed things up again, both musically and maybe bringing in some different sidemen and pushing the limits here and there. Soulful stuff is great, mind you, but I think we’re heading into more serious and tedious melancholy this time. Blue mood and British sensibility are all over this album, with songs of disillusionment and lost dreams, so maybe next time he’ll find the inspiration for more varied feelings and musical settings. Even the subtle additions of flute and other instruments for flavor here and there are a welcome textural element. I hate to put it in these terms, but Knopfler and I are the same age, and this album has some of the signs of late middle age resignation and mournfulness about it. Done right, there’s definitely a place for that in the musical domain, if it’s deep and cutting in its way. Only a handful of these songs reach that depth or poignancy.

Good, but not great
If you've read any of my other CD reviews this will be old news. I've always been a huge Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler Fan. This is a good CD, but not as good as the CD Shangri-La. Shangri-La is a must have for anyone that ever liked Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler -- you might even think you were transported to an alternate Universe where Dire Straits is still together. In fact, Mark Knopfler is to Dire Straits pretty much what Sting was to the Police, Donald Fagen was to Steely Dan and Don Henley was to the Eagles and so on. There always seems to be one of the group that defines the sound of the band and with Dire Straits it was and always will be Mark Knopfler. This is a good CD if you like Mark or Dire Straits, but Shangri-La is better. Of course I must add this caveat. If ... If you've read any of my other CD reviews this will be old news. An excellent release from Mr Knopfler
I really like this album. Great songs, great vocals and masterful guitar. The last track, In the Sky, has quickly become one of my all time favories with an enchanting acoustic guitar track. Punish the Monkey is pure Knopfler wit and a reprise from It Never Rains. I did not really care for Shangri La and thought this album would be more of the same but it grew on me quickly.
