About this product

Product Information

"We're far more accustomed to--and comfortable with--seeing women portrayed as victims of war who deserve our sympathy rather than as resilient survivors who demand our respect..." Former ABC journalist Gayle Tzemach Lemmon tells the riveting true story of Kamila Sidiqi and other women of Afghanistan in the wake of the Taliban's fearful rise to power. In what Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea , calls "one of the most inspiring books I have ever read," Lemmon recounts with novelistic vividness the true story of a fearless young woman who not only reinvented herself as an entrepreneur to save her family but, in the face of ferocious opposition, brought hope to the lives of dozens of women in war-torn Kabul.

  • The Dressmaker of Khair Khana--disappointing

The author, journalist Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, tells an inspiring story of women in Afghanistan who support their families during the terrorism of the Taliban by sewing and selling their work secretly. Unfortunately, it is written like a novel with imagined dialogue and circumstances that become cloying. The women's courageous entrepreneurship would make an excellent essay for a magazine. As written, it's a book full of padding to fill 243 pages. The reader could learn much more from other sources. It's disappointing that a writer with such a rich background in political research and writing didn't give the reader, or the women she wrote about, a better narrative.

  • Extremely inspiring and very satisfying

This was an inspiring story of a delightful young lady with tremendous courage in an almost impossible environment. It's a quick read that leaves you hoping the very best of continued success to she and her family. A great reason for reading a book. PD
