Arguably their finest album, this follow-up to Opiate showcases Tool at their best, assisted by clean, crisp production, without the muddiness of Aenima. Edgy guitar riffs are complemented by spitting, heavy bass, especially on "Sober" and "Crawl Away". Lyrically, Tool are at their vitriolic best, targeting religious hypocrisy ("Intolerance," "Sober"; always a popular theme), the loss of innocence and it's consequences ("Prison Sex"), and deliberate ignorance ("Swamp Song"). Henry Rollins makes a guest appearance on "Bottom," which, along with "4 Degrees," deals with questions of identity. Undertow is also Tool's most musically adventurous album, lacking the occasionally numbing sameness of Aenima, and with considerably more sophistication than their previous work.

    Amazing CD in Great Condition

    One of the greatest CD's ever made, in my honest opinion. This is in great quality, and at it's price, an absolute STEAL. Maynard is at his best with this, as of course is the rest of the band, and you just can't ever go wrong with Tool! Get this immediately, you won't regret it!

    Tool undertow

    When its all said and done. this is crap. Lots of strange time changes but is that really music? Demented lyrics, How many even close to normal people want to hear about prison sex? I like the heavy sounds and inventive rhythms but at what cost? Do I really have to listen to really sick demented raving of an obvious lunatic to hear great heavy guitar tones? Sometimes I like Tool. I bought the record. Its just that over time, its really just crap.

    Great

    Tool: Danny Carey, Paul D'Amour, Maynard James, Adam Jones. Additional personnel: Henry Rollins (vocals). Recorded at Grand Master Studios, Hollywood, California. UNDERTOW is an example of nimble heavy metal in the angtsy/artsy tradition of Jane's Addiction. Tool favors medium tempos, which gives several of the group's songs a modern-day Black Sabbath feel, but fortunately lead singer Maynard James mostly steers clear of the usual quasi-operatic yowling favored by most metal frontmen--he's a remarkably expressive singer in a genre not usually so noted. As for the band's world-view, it's pretty much summed up in the unsentimentally named "Prison Sex": "Do unto others, what has been done to you."

    totally caught up in the undertow!

    this is not your typical heavy metal cd at all!this is actually more grunge than metal,"grungemetal",if you will.yeah,there's the obvious influences,(soundgarden,janes addiction,nine inch nails),maybe...BUT,they devour it all,and spit out one hell of an aural assault on your senses.THICK!,RHYTHMIC!,POUNDING!,BASS HEAVY!STRONG VOICE,(at times,haunting!)EVERY SONG IS GOOD!(hidden track is legendary).this is TOOL'S finest moment!it's hard to believe this came out 15 years ago,but not one alt-metal cd since has topped this one!IF YOU DO NOT OWN THIS ONE,do yourself a favor,buy this,put it in your discman,put the headphones on,turn it up,AND LOSE YOURSELF!!IT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT!!

    UNDERTOW TAKES YOU TO DEPTHS

    TOOL IS HANDS DOWN 1 OF THE GREATEST ROCK BANDS OF THIS MODERN AURA NOW ALMOST 15 YEARS STRONG. UNDERTOW IS THE CD THAT PUT THEM ON THE MAP. WAS MAYNARD'S MOST FIERCE CD. I SEEN THEM LIVE IN CONCERT TWICE AND IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE DO. WHAT MOST KNOW IF A TOOL FAN IF YOU FOLLOW IT. UNDERTOW WAS SAW RAW BECAUSE IT WAS DEALING WITH THE ABUSE AND THE WRATH OF HIS CHILDHOOD. HIS FATHER A PREACHER AND THE TORMENT HE PUT HIM THROW.WITH THE ABUSE. I LOVE EVERY SINGLE TOOL CD.WISH I COULD FIND A LIVE 1 OR THEY WOULD PUT OUT. BUT THIS CD IS LIKE GOSPEL A RELIGION LIKE IT SAYS ON THE INSERT.FINDING THAT HOLY MEDIUM BETWEEN YIN-YANG!!
