Excellent on many levels. Insight from inside Germany during Hitler's rise to power following WWI. Created awareness of German resistance which we hear little about. Excellent biography with compelling story of an amazing man. Details of established protestant church's attempt to slow Hitler's desire to control church, despite many inside church easily acquiescing to their Fuehrer. An in-depth presentation of Bonhoeffer's evolving Christian theology and faith journey. While nonfiction, the latter portion of book which dealt with Bonhoeffer's own involvement and eventual tragic end read like a novel. So impressed with book I've been buying used copies on eBay to give to friends and acquaintances with hopes they pass it on to others. Excellent on many levels. A Stalwart Hero in Evil Times
The comprehensive story of Bonhoeffer is like no other version I Have ever read. I have trouble putting it down. It is so relevant today as we are facing the same tactics in media and politician who are trying to get us to destroy all of our foundations so that a new movement can build a new foundation to take our country in a different direction. I learned a lot about the Fuerher principle. Americans should read this book and study History so we don't repeat the mistakes of the Nation of Germany. I already owned this book on my Nook reader, and wanted to be able to make notes in margins, so bought this perfectly wonderful paperback - 700 pages of Eric Metaxas' wonderful writing about Bonhoeffer....takes a while to work through such an intense piece of work about such an important person, so having been able to get this copy so quickly was a God-send. Bonhoeffer's life and work belie his youth (39 at the time of his death in a Nazi prison....) and, yet, he managed to live and work and write so much that's so important for today's world....I already owned this book on my Nook reader, and wanted to be able to make notes in margins, so bought this perfectly wonderful paperback - 700 pages of Eric Metaxas' wonderful writing about Bonhoeffer....takes a while to work through such an intense piece of work about such an important person, so having been able to get this copy so quickly was a God-send. I haven't read it yet but I know the story basically and I am a big fan of Eric Metaxis, so I am looking forward to reading this book, the only thing I dislike is the small print I am a senior...lol It's almost 600 pages so it will take me a while to get it read.
