About this product

Product Information

Ryan is scared to use the potty. He's afraid to have a poop because he's afraid it's going to hurt. When Ryan's parents take him to visit Dr. Gold, she engages his imagination with the story of Bill the Coyote's messy house. She also shows him what happens inside the body, and explains how different foods make using the potty easy or hard. This story, along with Ryan's ""poop program,"" will help young children gain the confidence they need to overcome this common problem and establish healthy habits.

iParenting Media Award Winner "Written by a pediatrician, the fictionalized text creates a positive partnership between children, parents, and physicians to practice healthy eating and digestive habits....this book would be welcomed by parents who face a similar situation or in doctors' waiting rooms."-- School Library Journal "He seemed especially enthralled by the story of Coyote Bill and we began using the metaphor often, encouraging our son to 'become the boss of his poop.' Within a week of getting the book, along with the help of some stool softener, our son's fears diminished and he began pooping normally again to everyone's relief! A year and a half later, this is still a favorite book of my son's."-- Addison Reads "Every child with toilet training trouble should see this book!"--Allison Schonwald, MD, Pediatrician, Harvard Medical School, author of The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Potty Training Problems " It Hurts When I Poop! is a wonderful book. My daughter runs a little slow, digestion-wise, and is prone to tummy aches when she holds everything in. Dr. Bennett's story provided her with knowledge about her body, confidence in her intelligence, and a plan to remedy the situation. I heartily recommend Dr. Bennett's smart, playful treatment of a frustrating problem."--Mary Kay Zuravleff, author of The Bowl is Already Broken "This is a terrific book that will help children overcome the fears they experience with using the potty. I highly recommend this book and think it will be enthusiastically received by parents and children alike."--Teri Crane, author of Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day: Proven Secrets of the Potty Pro "At last, someone has provided parents with a fun-filled, non-threatening approach to help children who hold in their bowel movements. Dr. Bennett's book will be a permanent fixture in my waiting room."--Benny Kerzner, MD, Chairman, Department of Gastroenterology, Children's National Medical Center

This book arrived musty and needed to be thrown away. Unclear whether the book started out musty or became so during shipping as one of the books it was packaged with was way worse. The cover was also bent and a bit torn, most likely from being shipped in a bag that offered no protection to this thin paperback book.

  • glad I bought it

I bought this book for my 3.5 year old son who has issues... it hurts when he poops - he holds it in - etc. It has helped to open up the dialogue and he really does love to read it with me, it is even his idea sometimes. I haven't seen a huge improvement in his behaviors because of it, but I do think it has helped him to be able to express his feelings about the situation and talk more openly about it - and also to feel a little bit better about himself because he realized he's not the only kid with this problem. The only thing I don't really like about the book is that's it not really well written. I just don't think the story "flows" very well, but my son seems to understand everything despite that.

  • Too long

This book is a little too long and informative for a 3 year old trying to learn to potty. I think it's more for older kids, but they should already know how to potty, so I don't see the point. It is very informative, but if they lose interest before the end of the book, it doesn't really matter.

  • It hurts when I poop!

I bought this book because we were having a hard time getting my great-grandson to go poop. He would hold it and then go a little bit at a time in his pants although he was potty trained as far as peeing went. It hurt him once to go poop after he was constipated so he had a fear of going poop. He liked the story and it helped him get over his fear.

  • It Hurts When I poop

This book is wonderful for parents of children that are afraid to poop on the potty! After reading it my son a few times, his fear has seemed to ease a little. And, he even references the book at times!
