About this product

Product Information

By the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Summer of '69 Their secret love affair has lasted for decades -- but this could be the summer that changes everything. When Mallory Blessing's son, Link, receives deathbed instructions from his mother to call a number on a slip of paper in her desk drawer, he's not sure what to expect. But he certainly does not expect Jake McCloud to answer. It's the late spring of 2020 and Jake's wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election. There must be a mistake, Link thinks. How do Mallory and Jake know each other? Flash back to the sweet summer of 1993: Mallory has just inherited a beachfront cottage on Nantucket from her aunt, and she agrees to host her brother's bachelor party. Cooper's friend from college, Jake McCloud, attends, and Jake and Mallory form a bond that will persevere -- through marriage, children, and Ursula's stratospheric political rise -- until Mallory learns she's dying. Based on the classic film "Same Time Next Year" (which Mallory and Jake watch every summer), 28 Summers explores the agony and romance of a one-weekend-per-year affair and the dramatic ways this relationship complicates and enriches their lives, and the lives of the people they love.

"This sweeping love story is Hilderbrand's best ever. . . Her stories are relatable in an aspirational way, but her attention to detail is what makes her characters feel like living, breathing people you want to know. They would never skimp on citronella candles; they would save the least creaky rocking chair for you." -- Elisabeth Egan, New York Times Book Review, "Hilderbrand is the queen of the smart beach read, and her latest is no exception." -- Entertainment Weekly, "Hilderbrand steers this tightly written novel with ease and skill. . . . Great Book!

This book is one of Elin Hildebrand's best so far. I would recommend it to anyone. She writes some great books.

  • Top critical review

    Light reading

I love this author's books and read all of them. This one was not as good as the others. It was sort o f like the old movie Same Time Next Year. The story being divided into 28 parts made it a little uneven. It was also a little unbelievable that an affair could go on that many years and no one suspects something is going on. The heroine lives on a small island and waits for her lover to come be with her over a 3 day weekend once a year. Not very believable. But I still love Elin Hilderbrand's books.

  • Elin does it again

This author’s books are always a good read since she often writes about Nantucket. This had a different twist but was highly enjoyable.

  • Compelling from beginning to end!

Just as with most of her other books, Erin has a compelling surprise to draw you in and keep you looking forward to the next chapter.

  • Could not put it down!

Another addicting storyline from Elin. I love all her novels. They are my summer favorites.
