About this product

Product Information

In Economic Facts and Fallacies , Thomas Sowell exposes some of the most popular fallacies about economic issues in a lively manner that does not require any prior knowledge of economics. These fallacies include many beliefs widely disseminated in the media and by politicians, such as fallacies about urban problems, income differences, male-female economic differences, as well as economic fallacies about academia, about race, and about Third World countries. Sowell shows that fallacies are not simply crazy ideas but in fact have a certain plausibility that gives them their staying power- and makes careful examination of their flaws both necessary and important.

Reviews
"From one of America's most noted conservative economists, a short, original book that offers some unconventional ideas about how to think about common economic topics."-- Baltimore Sun, "This readable volume is a useful primer exposing how economics relates to the social issues that affect our country."-- Publishers Weekly, "Sowell's book dismantles many of the pervasive fallacies running rampant in politics today, broken into categories of urban life, gender, academia, income, race, and the problems of the third world. ... In Economic Facts and Fallacies , as in his other work, Sowell makes a persuasive and powerful case, armed with a solid arsenal of statistics, numbers, and historical facts."-- RealClearPolitics.com, "Thomas Sowell marshals his arguments with admirable clarity and authority. There is not a chapter in which he does not produce a statistic that both surprises and overturns received wisdom."-- The Economist

  • Should be assigned reading for every American, or get the audio version.

Dr. Thomas Sowell is an American gem, I would identify him as a national treasure. He is not a novelist. He has been a gifted author on dozens of topics for decades. Whenever he writes, his grasp of actual facts, logic, and reality is unsurpassed. He is a master at clearly exposing spin and nonsense for the fraud it is. If you have never read Sowell, be prepared for surprising and rewarding mental exercise. You will be amazed at what he sees that we other people miss. I cannot list the hundreds of topics he explains in words that I have tried to compose earlier but without Sowell's ability to express them so clearly. ANYTHING he writes is a master work. In addition, his research staff is impeccable.

  • Keeping it real, keeping it simple!

An easy to read, not too deep, not too shallow, easy to understand assessment of current economic issues facing our country. Economics is like history with issues, pressures, public opinion, and policy shifts repeating themselves over time. Sowell addresses these factors, facts and fallacies in an easy to understand format supported with references. Kind of a "high altitude" , "helicopter view" of economic facts and fallacies. I really enjoyed it as kind of a refresher of some things learned in the past in college studies relative to a minor in econ.
