About this product

Product Information

"I saw well why the gods do not speak to us openly, nor let us answer . . . Why should they hear the babble that we think we mean? How can they meet us face to face till we have faces?" Haunted by the myth of Cupid and Psyche throughout his life, C.S. Lewis wrote this, his last, extraordinary novel, to retell their story through the gaze of Psyche's sister, Orual. Disfigured and embittered, Orual loves her younger sister to a fault and suffers deeply when she is sent away to Cupid, the God of the Mountain. Psyche is forbidden to look upon the god's face, but is persuaded by her sister to do so; she is banished for her betrayal. Orual is left alone to grow in power but never in love, to wonder at the silence of the gods. Only at the end of her life, in visions of her lost beloved sister, will she hear an answer. " Till We Have Faces succeeds in presenting with imaginative directness what its author has described elsewhere as 'the divine, magical, terrifying and ecstatic reality in which we all live' . . . It] deepens for adults that sense of wonder and strange truth which delights children in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , Prince Caspian , and other legends of Narnia." -- New York Times "The most significant and triumphant work that Lewis has . . . produced." -- New York Herald Tribune

A “myth retold” deserves a second read

I was introduced to this “myth retold” years ago. I love it so much I also ordered for my sister who shares my love of C.S. Lewis.

  • Excellent!

Excellent book. Engaging while contacting an introspective look at human nature. That Lewis writes from a Christian point of view makes this a reflective piece of literature which places an emphasis upon the condition of the human soul. When I started reading this I could not stop. Read with an open mind one should realize the difference between real love and jealousy is one person. This should appeal to people who are first time readers of Lewis, those with an academic background, and Christians. I believe more than anything else regarding this work, if read correctly and understood as it was intended, a person should walk away understanding the difference between love and desire, how people are affected by the actions of others, and perhaps ow base desires can be consuming to an ...

  • Till We Have Faces is Lewis at his best!

In this retelling of the ancient myth of Cupid (Greek god of love) and Psyche (Greek word for soul / spirit), Lewis explores the human soul's need for love. He also deftly handles the human's tendency to substitute selfishness and deception for love and truth. Powerful, engaging, and deeply moving. The reader will benefit from some basic knowledge of the original mythology on which this is based. Like his Narnian chronicles or his space trilogy, it is a great story, but is also deeply insightful and allegorical (though a more challenging allegorical read than the Chronicles). Buy it. Read it. And may you meet the Love that persues your soul in it.

  • TILL WE HAVE FACES

I PURCHASED THE BOOK BECAUSE I'M INTERESTED IN THE AUTHOR, C.S.LEWIS. IT IS A REWORKING OF THE CUPID/PSYCHE MYTH FROM GREEK MYTHOLOGY BUT INCLUDES MANY CHRISTIAN ELEMENTS. I ENJOYED THE BOOK, ALTHOUGH THE FIRST HALF OF IT DRAGGED SOMEWHAT. THE SECOND HALF SEEMED TO READ MUCH FASTER. THE CONDITION OF THE BOOK WAS AS I WAS LED TO BELIEVE. C.S. LEWIS HAS A UNIQUE POINT OF VIEW WHICH IN SOME WAYS IS DATED BUT IN MANY WAYS STILL TRANSLATES WELL TO TODAY.

  • VERY GOOD

VERY GOOD NOVEL OF DURING THE TIME OF CHRISTIAN CRUSADES WHICH INCORPORATES IDEAS OF ..AN IMAGINARY OR PERHAPS MORE TO THE POINT ANOTHER DIMENSION WHICH MOST HUMANS CANNOT SEE FOR THEY DO NOT HAVE THE SPIRITUAL EYESIGHT
