Synopsis
Five years after its first publication, with more than 150,000 copies in print, Final Gifts has become a classic. In this moving and compassionate book, hospice nurses Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley share their intimate experiences with patients at the end of life, drawn from more than twenty years experience tending the terminally ill. Through their stories we come to appreciate the near-miraculous ways in which the dying communicate their needs, reveal their feelings, and even choreograph their own final moments; we also discover the gifts-of wisdom, faith, and love-that the dying leave for the living to share. Filled with practical advice on responding to the requests of the dying and helping them prepare emotionally and spiritually for death, Final Gifts shows how we can help the dying person live fully to the very end.

    Very Compelling

I received a copy of this book shortly after the loss of my father a few years ago. I wish I had read it before his passing but the book was so enlightening and provided answers to some of the comments he made to me during his final days. When a friend of mine told me that her mother was dying, I gave the book to her. She told me that she loved it and it helped her tremendously! Now that my mother is in the dying process, I purchased this copy to give to my sister. Hopefully, it will provide her with some insight to the dying process and the "gifts" that are given to the people who provide the care during those last days of living. This book is quite an eye opener and I would recommend it to anyone.

  • Final Gifts

Insightful and compassionately written. I bought a copy for myself and our daughter who works with elders and some elders who are in their last physical stage of life. I learned much from the author's observations and snipets of those who died while in hospice care.

  • Enlightening.

I read this book when my Dad was in the last months of his life while dealing with cancer. The nurses that wrote this book did a great job telling of their experiences with hospice patients. After reading the book I could more easily understand what my Dad was going through. I have purchased many of these books and passed them on to people experiencing the same issues with their family members, health care providers, and nursing home personnel. I would recommend this to anyone dealing with end of life issues.

  • Excellent Read!

As I experience the journey with my mom's terminal illness, reading this book has been such an informative perspective and has recommendations to help me better recognize what I may be able to do to encourage my mother and our family members during this difficult time. I highly recommend anyone who needs to better understand the behavior changes in themselves or a loved one to read this book...I only wish I would have gotten it sooner.

  • Final Gifts is indeed a gift!

I can't say enough good things about this book. The information is clearly presented and evidence is compelling. Something I wish I had had when so many of my loved ones died. Things that need doing, forgiveness asked for or given, clearing the slate for whatever happens after death. Each person needs to read it for themselves and will find within it many answers and much peace.
