It's not how good a novelist you are; it's who you are
This book is an example of someone in a big publishing house saying, “Hey, Dave Barry is a Pulitzer prize winning journalist. Let’s give him hundreds of thousands of dollars to write us a novel.” So they did and Big Trouble is what we got. The story and characters are cute enough. It evolves a business man and his family, a homeless man living in a tree in their backyard and some mob guys who are smuggling nuclear weapons. The problem with Big Trouble is primarily Dave Berry’s execution as a writer. His word choice is at times weak, sentence structure is weak, he feels a need to put a dialog tag almost everywhere versus rewriting and making the work flow without them. The book feels as if it was hurried and no rewrites were done. The worse thing is that the work has no sense of ... a fun romp
In a pre 9/11 world terrorism was acceptable fodder for humor. If you can let go of the scary possibilities and enjoy the story you will laugh outloud at the convoluted plot and quirky characters that populate "Big Trouble". With tongue firmly planted in cheek as only Dave Barry can write this story unfolds with predictable hillarity. I still giggle when I think about the subplot involving a pet dog and the toad. The movie was actually entertaining but left out some of the funniest scenes. This is great beach reading.
