  • Incredible - in every way

I like books that are credible - believable - so this one is incredible. The anti-hero of the book, Allie Fox, goes beyond the bounds of credibility. But maybe we are not supposed to believe - just enjoy the wicked characterization developed by Theroux. The story is told through Allie's eldest son Charlie and, without spoiling the plot, the real clever stuff is the way Theroux manipulates Charlie's perception of 'Father' as his dad becomes more and more crazy. The writing style, of course, is also incredible. Theroux is up there with the best. But, because the story is not believable, you can't be there with the Fox family on the Mosquito Coast. So only 'good' rather than 'excellent'.
