An ending for a new beginning.
"Changes for Addy" is the sixth and last book of the original set of books based around Addy Walker, a girl turning ten years old in 1860's Philadelphia. The Civil War has just ended and Addy is excited to bring her family together once and for all after being separated on the plantation. I'd recommend this book, and many of the books in the American Girls Collection. I don't say "all" only because I haven't read them all yet, but I'm sure I will! In the last installment for Addy, I think the reader will feel that s/he has learned a lot throughout her stories - but the book stands fine on it's own, too. Addy is happier than she's ever been. Her family is almost complete again! Once she and her parents and brother find baby sister Esther, she thinks they will be a "real" family ... But tragedy is around the corner.... and Addy learns that the best thing to hold on to in life is your heart and your love for others. The sixth book in the historical American Girls series is usually the book that always left me feeling as though "This is where you think it ends, but really the journey is just starting." I don't know how many of us remember turning ten years old, but I think it's an important time of development. Growing up isn't always as easy as we "grown-ups" would like to think, and this story is a great lesson for dealing with hardships and coming out stronger because of them. A fantastic and touching read aimed towards seven to thirteen year-olds, but that really could be for anyone.
