About this product

Product Information

Learning to Bow has been heralded as one of the funniest, liveliest, and most insightful books ever written about the clash of cultures between America and Japan. With warmth and candor, Bruce Feiler recounts the year he spent as a teacher in a small rural town. Beginning with a ritual outdoor bath and culminating in an all-night trek to the top of Mt. Fuji, Feiler teaches his students about American culture, while they teach him everything from how to properly address an envelope to how to date a Japanese girl.

  • Learning to Bow Review

I like that this book gives insite as to how the Japan culture is different from America. I think it's a very interesting book so far. Some parts drag on a little bit but the main idea is always there. It's a story about a American teacher who went over to Japan to teach english in a school over there. It talks about the way of Japan and how even though Japan is evolving with new technology it still has that old Japan culture in it.

  • Great!

I decided to purchase this book before traveling to Japan to teach English for a summer. "Learning to Bow" is the personal account of author Bruce Feiler's year teaching English in Japan. The book is funny and poignant, and does a good job of representing the Japanese culture. Anyone interested in learning more about Japanese culture and especially thier educational system should read this book. Highly recommended!
