  • WHY AMERICA IS A MELTING POT

An avid fan of his PBS television series’ in the 1990’s, I really looked forward to the hardbound companion cookbook, “The Frugal Gourmet On Our Immigrant Ancestors.” If I had to choose one cookbook to take along to be stranded on the proverbial desert island, it would be this one. I’ll tell you why. As I already know the basics of cooking, I can leave my trusty “Betty Crocker’s Picture Cookbook” behind. And since I might be on this desert island a long, long time, well, I do like variety, after all. This book certainly does not disappoint in this respect. The wide variety of cooking, which the millions of immigrants have brought to the United Sates, is well represented here in Mr. Smith’s book. The “foreign name,” or real name is given, along with an English translation. A ...

  • Unique Cookbook for a collector

So much historical information about everyone’s ancestral past. Recipes organized by nationality with very nice drawings in each section. Recommend this to cookbook collectors as it is quite varied and educational too.

  • "A Wonderful Representation of Ethnic Diversity in The United States" Courtesy of "The Frugal Gourmet"

The late Jeff Smith, (The Frugal Gourmet) presents a well-written companion cookbook to his outstanding PBS series, "The Frugal Gourmet on our Immigrant Ancestors". He explores the cultural heritage and diversity of our country by showcasing the recipes of various ethnic groups that have immigrated to the United States and have contributed to this kalidescope of delicious and tantalizing cuisines, ranging from Armenian, Basque, Cambodian, Cuban, Korean, Japanese, Irish, Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, Indian, Iranian, Lebanese, Jewish, Polish, Russian, Hawaiian, Hungarian, Puerto Rican, Portugese and my own culture, Filipino! Mr. Smith truly represents these, and other cultures together in this wonderful cookbook!

  • Frugal Gourmet Immigrant Ancestors

I actually have an autographed copy of this book and liked it so much I was buying one as a gift. The recipes are frequently Semi authenitc. Most of the ingrediebts are happiy available. Many of the cuisines are not available in other "international" cookbooks. I think of the Newyork Times International cookbook. It's at least 50% French. Good but not as all encompassing as The Frugal Gourmet book.
