Tom Hanks is Chuck Noland, a man in a hurry. His job for Federal Express has him traveling the world on a moment's notice, exhorting the company's employees to speed things up--"never turn your back on the clock." When he's suddenly called away for business on Christmas night, his tolerant longtime girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt) drives him to the airport. They have their Christmas in the car--and Chuck plunks an engagement ring into her lap right before he gets on the plane, telling her, "I'll be right back." But an unexpected storm cuts the plane's crew off from radio contact and blows them off course. Chuck is the sole survivor of the resulting crash, and washes up on a completely deserted island. Stranded there, he must give up everything that he once took for granted and learn how to survive all alone in the wilderness. Even though it's virtually "silent", I loved it!
Cast Away is one of those quiet, wisp-of-a-movie movies that keep you entertained without too much going on. In the movie, Tom Hanks is a FED EX executive traveling by FED EX plane when something goes wrong and the plane plunges into the sea. Tom's character seems to be the only survivor, and he finds himself alone in the middle of an ocean on an island. He lives there for years until he finally makes it back home, only to find that the life he left is completely different (and the love of his life has moved on). Irony is a big part of the picture--helpful items arrive in the form of shipped FED EX packages as they wash up on shore. One particular item, "Wilson", his volleyball friend, becomes his only companion for years. Not much happens, but I think that's okay. It's a nice change ...
