About this product

Product Information

The astonishing New York Times bestseller that chronicles how a brain scientist's own stroke led to enlightenment On December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven- year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist experienced a massive stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. As she observed her mind deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life-all within four hours-Taylor alternated between the euphoria of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace, and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized she was having a stroke and enabled her to seek help before she was completely lost. It would take her eight years to fully recover. For Taylor, her stroke was a blessing and a revelation. It taught her that by "stepping to the right" of our left brains, we can uncover feelings of well-being that are often sidelined by "brain chatter." Reaching wide audiences through her talk at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference and her appearance on Oprah's online Soul Series , Taylor provides a valuable recovery guide for those touched by brain injury and an inspiring testimony that inner peace is accessible to anyone.

Read it once, use it for life!

Amazing lessons about how the brain works for us and how we can harness its distinct sides to work for us as we want it to. Dr. Taylor is an excellent writer and tells a story in a compelling way while keeping the scientific parts very easy to understand and appreciate. Thanks for this great book!

  • a very meaningful read

This book was the choice of the month by my book club and turned out to be an incredible gift..i highly recommend it and in fact bought several copies to give as gifts..this is a profound and fascinating story of an amazing young (37 year old woman) highly regarded scientist and expert on the human brain who suffered a massive left brain stroke....and she takes us through her experience from its onset to her 8 year struggle bringing her into full recovery..what is fascinating is our own discovery through her telling of the experience of what the human brain is capable of if properly directed...it is a gift for any stroke survivor to read as well as any caregiver to understand the importance of how to assist the patient toward recovery...the do's and don'ts of caregiving...and ...

  • Absolutely terrific book! For head injury folks too!

I bought it after reading library book. A friend had read it and just showed me the list in the back which is for friends & family - suggestions on how to help. Have had 3 head injuries in recent years. This book helped me to see what I went through from the OTHER side and to regain a lot of my self-respect! Bought copies for myself and my children!!!! Health care workers should read it too! And more than a few doctors!!!

  • Excellent Book

This book is very good for understanding how the brain works. It was written by a brain scientist who had a stroke and also the presence of mind to recount what the experience was like. Very useful and interesting.
