The swift and lively tale follows the absurdly melodramatic adventures of the youthful Candide, who is forced into the army, flogged, shipwrecked, betrayed, robbed, separated from his beloved Cun gonde, and tortured by the Inquisition. As Candide experiences and witnesses calamity upon calamity, he begins to discover that--contrary to the teachings of his tutor, Dr. Pangloss--all is perhaps not always for the best. After many trials, travails, and incredible reversals of fortune, Candide and his friends finally retire together to a small farm, where they discover that the secret of happiness is simply "to cultivate one's garden," a philosophy that rejects excessive optimism and metaphysical speculation in favor of the most basic pragmatism. &&L/P&&LPFilled with wit, intelligence, and an abundance of dark humor, &&LICandide&&L/I is relentless and unsparing in its attacks upon corruption and hypocrisy--in religion, government, philosophy, science, and even romance. Ultimately, this celebrated work says that it is possible to challenge blind optimism without losing the will to live and pursue a happy life. &&L/P&&LP&&LBGita May&&L/B is Professor of French at Columbia University. She has published extensively on the French Enlightenment, eighteenth-century aesthetics, the novel and autobiography, and women in literature, history, and the arts. &&L/P

  • Was Voltaire a good guy? Actually, he was a jerk.

Voltaire sets up his paper tiger then, with characteristic cynicism, proceeds with his pornographic mockery. He dishes up sarcasm and criticism for every institution he considers, but naturally provides no positive alternatives. If you somehow like the failed rantings of an over-esteemed, conceited 18th century "philosopher" then you'll line up with everyone else to robotically sing his praises. I, like others, had to read his tripe for college, but I refused to laud the man. He is a bigmouthed loser who gets away with it just because he's brilliant. Voltaire's message is empty; he gave us nothing, excepting the guillotine. If the book had been written in 2010 no one would even publish it. Voltaire is intellectual cancer.

  • Voltaire's satire on the French nation of his times.

It's exactly as described. The Barnes and Noble includes much background for a further appreciation of this French classic
