This is probably THE classic American children's book. It is a beautifully written story that describes life on a family farm during the forties or fifties, but it is also a fable about friendship and the power of the written word. As a teacher, mother, and grandmother, I have read this book aloud over twenty times, enjoying it every time. It has a little girl who saves a pig, the runt of the litter, from death, her all-boy brother, a despicable rat who saves the day more than once, a normal pig, and an amazing spider (aren't all spiders amazing?)who also saves the pig by making HIM appear to be amazing. There is layer upon layer of metaphor and irony in this book, but mostly it is a unforgettably good story. Who could forget the county fair or swinging on Mr. Zuckerman's barn swing? ...
