About this product

Product Information

First published in hardcover to vigorous praise, Colm Toibin's New York Times bestselling novel is about a young Irish immigrant in Brooklyn in the early 1950s. "One of the most unforgettable characters in contemporary literature" ( Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ), Eilis Lacey has come of age in small-town Ireland in the hard years following World War Two. When an Irish priest from Brooklyn offers to sponsor Eilis in America, she decides she must go, leaving her fragile mother and her charismatic sister behind. Eilis finds work in a department store on Fulton Street, and when she least expects it, finds love. Tony, who loves the Dodgers and his big Italian family, slowly wins her over with patient charm. But just as Eilis begins to fall in love, devastating news from Ireland threatens the promise of her future.

Brooklyn - I suppose this city will be the main setting for the story, but since I have not read more than 75 pages, time will tell!

I've just begun reading BROOKYLN and am intrigued to continue. Tobin's style of writing makes it easy to follow the plot and the main character is becoming more & more interesting.

Colm Toibin's post-WWII novel is about a young woman who lives in a small town in Ireland and is given an opportunity to broaden her horizons when a priest offers her a sponsorship to live in America. Tobin's sparse use of narrative and limited omniscient perspective lends to the isolation that Eilis Lacey, the story's protagonist, feels as she begins a new life in Brooklyn, New York. The supporting characters give the reader a sense of the extended (Irish) community, a boarding house run by an Irishwoman, that allows Eilis to integrate into American life. Eilis slowly comes into maturity when she meets a man outside of her cultural base and her personal challenge is to either remain in America or return to Ireland to care for her elderly mother. There is something to get out of this novel ...

  • This book came to me a lot rougher than expected. Described as GOOD. Should have been BARELY ACCEPTABLE.
