Synopsis
What manner of aircraft pioneered airborne radar and anti-submarine warfare, almost replaced the immortal Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, and yet disappeared from the annals of aviation history with not so much as a footnote in most authoritative histories of WWII? The elusive Douglas B-18 bomber. The very few stories that have appeared since the end of the war invariably spoke of the aircraft in crude and disparaging terms including the bomber that nobody wanted, but more than 30 surviving crew members who served aboard the aircraft had no such disparaging words. How could so many people be so wrong? Developed in parallel to the DC-1, the B-18 and it's obscure development, the handsome B-23 were precisely the right aircraft, at the right time, to help America defeat the serious Axis submarine threat in the Caribbean and train most of the B-17 crews who headed overseas. Serving in every theater of war, from Iceland, Canada and the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, through the Caribbean and Latin America to the remote Galapagos, Alaska, Hawaii, Java, Australia and the Philippines, the B-18 was lauded by crew members as a superb anti-submarine aircraft. Indeed, some were amongst the first USAAC aircraft to strike back at the invading Japanese forces in the Far East, and others were lost to both aerial and surface combat. For the first time, this in depth study of the development, operational units, series colors, wartime activities and full production list of these 340 aircraft combine with over 350 drawings and photographs to reveal the true impact of America's forgotten warriors., These long-forgotten American medium bombers, the Douglas B-18 Bolo and B-23 Dragon, served as anti-submarine aircraft during WWII. Here for the first time is an in-depth history of these forgotten aircraft, covering their development, production, performance specs, combat operations, and warpaint colors., What manner of aircraft pioneered airborne radar and anti-submarine warfare, almost replaced the immortal Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, and yet disappeared from the annals of aviation history with not so much as a footnote in most authoritative histories of WWII? Item as described and seller answered all my questions, making me feel confident in this purchase. Exquisite care taken in packaging. Seller offered companion item, which I accepted, and shipped them promptly together. There was no void space in box which can lead to crushing when stacked during the shipping process. That did not happen. Box was pristine! I cannot wait to see my daughter’s face when she opens this on Christmas Day! Thank you!!!

This seller couldn't have been better! She answered my questions promptly, sent me photos I requested and when the book arrived, on time, not only was it in excellent condition, but she had packaged it better than any item I can ever remember receiving in my many years of purchasing on Ebay! She also worked with me wonderfully on the price of the book that I purchased and there is not enough good that I can say about this seller! Thank you and please feel totally positive about any purchase! :-)

This OOP book was as described in the listing and was in excellent condition given its age and was a good price compared to other listings. It was dispatched promptly and arrived ahead of the estimated delivery date. It was very well packaged and couldn’t get much better protection. It was the first time that I’ve used this seller and would definitely purchase from them again.

  • The most up-to-date account of the Douglas B-18 heavy bomber

The Douglas B-18 Bolo is sometimes overshadowed by the more famous B-17 and B-24 in most books about US strategic bombers of the 1930s and World War II. However, the most trivial piece of information about this aircraft is the fact that initially had the upper hand over the B-17 when it came to securing sizeable production orders due to its lower unit cost compared to that of early-generation B-17s, although the B-18 prototype was inferior to that of the B-17 in performance. This book does a pretty good job of covering the story of design, development, flight testing, production, and operational career of the B-18 along with relative discussion of a number of derivatives, including the unbuilt XB-22 with R-2600s and the B-23 tactical bomber. Chapters 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 17 discuss and ...
