Birdy rocks!
An interesting story, told in an engaging way with excellent artwork, the story revolves around Tsutomu, a sort of dweeby guy, accidentally getting killed by Birdy, a female space federation cop. Now killing innocent civilians is most un-cool, according to Federation law, so Birdy is forced to remediate the issue by allowing Tsutomu to use her body - part time. As expected, Tsutomu, once he learns what the score is, is under-whelmed. "I have a girl in my head!" is all he can think of, despite efforts to convince him he's actually borrowing space in her body. The surface line of the story is Birdy chasing the bad guys, of course, in her job as galactic law enforcer. The understory of the two of them learning to co-exist in one body is the real story, so it seems to me. I say that Tsutomu is represented as 'dweeby', which seems to be a trend in anime for male characters, it seems. In the manga, Tsutomu is a little overwhelmed, at first, but does end up becoming a valuable part of the Tsutomu/Birdy team, even offering workable solutions to some of the issues. The manga presents a more believable character, I think, because Tsutomu actually learns from the experience, and, although, in the ongoing manga, he hasn't been returned to his own body yet, not in the available English translation, anyway, one gets the feeling that, once his own body is repaired and his spirit is back in it, he will come away from the experience enriched by the opportunity to see things from a 'different' point of view. I hope someone does a second season of this story that explores that a little further. The first season is greatly entertaining, however.
