  • Great beginner horn (or trumpeter's first doubler)

I've played trumpet most of my life and have always wanted to try out the trombone, but wasn't willing to shell out a couple thousand - even if I came by a good deal on a good used professional horn. I looked for recommendations and came across this model. It's a student model that (according to players way above my ability level) punches above it's weight class. I got it and was immediately able to hit the first couple partials. After a few more practice sessions I was able to hit the first five with relative ease. As a complete beginner (the last time I tried to handle a trombone was 45 years ago), I found it easy to play. Take this for what it is, but I would recommend this to anyone starting out.

  • Yamaha's are good!

I'm a sax player of many years trying to learn trombone and Yamaha's are always a good place to start though they do get pricey. Normally I buy pro horns but a student model is excellent for learning and the Yamaha's excel at both student and professional horns. They have a consistency to their products that makes buying over the internet, unseen, much more comfortable than horns that don't have that consistency in the manufacturing process. My saxes are both Yamaha's (alto Custom 82Z and tenor (yts62), and Selmers alto (reference 54) and bari (intermediate). That being said there are a lot of good horns out there to be had of different brand names. I'm old school and went the tried and true route but I wouldn't be afraid to try other brand names as I've learned it's really the player that makes the sound and what you want from the horn is reliability and performance.

  • Looks new, sounds good

Thank you. I was nervous that we couldn't afford to put our daughter in the school band when she expressed an interest, but now she is all set up!
