  • Mainly Incomprehensible Jargon (With a Few Interesting Ideas)

    Unfortunately, I did not find this book to be particularly interesting: most of the text was incomprehensible jargon (I'm a mechanical engineer and an avid reader, so that says something about the writing style). The key points boil down to: 1) language came about 200,000 to 60,000 years ago 2) Proxies for language are assumed to be intentional burial, grave goods, and cave art 3) language can be thought of as a way of organizing thought 4) Neandertals most likely did not have language: they don't seem to have intentional burial and cave art 5) A chimpanzee was taught to us American Sign Language and could make 2-word combinations but just seemed to go through a catalog of signs (such as "Apple + Draw" and "Apple + Knife" when it wanted an apple) 6) What the author's term "vocal learners" ...
