The Enduring Heart by Wilkie Au Wilkie Au, a Loyola Marymount University professor, writer, and pastoral minister, offers The Enduring Heart as a way to respond, in God’s love, to the joys and challenges of everyday life. As a gifted scholar, he demonstrates how spiritual practices form a more meaningful life. He chooses writings from the mystics, Doctors of the Church, theologians, and many others to illustrate his points. To begin with, I was drawn to Au’s expertise in clarifying the disciplines of St. Ignatius of Loyola. As a Jesuit theologian, his grasp of The Spiritual Exercises is broad. For example, he explains when praying the Ignatian “application of senses” to “recognize the similarity between ourselves and biblical personalities,” and in so doing, see God’s actions, past ... I appreciate the way he is able to present complex topics simply. Likewise, Au delves into the beautiful works of another saint, Julian of Norwich, who writes: “Because all we are and all we have are given to us, gratitude is the primary response to life” (150). He describes how the seeds of gratitude blossom into many fruits within the spiritual life, including “response-ability.” Au cautions not to “trample on the holy ground of our experiences,” but, with gratitude, revere them as sacred, because God is there (102). In addition, Au includes in the book a section on Walter Brueggemann’s “Recurrent Patterns of Life.” Brueggemann, an acclaimed Old Testament scholar, observes that human beings move repeatedly through three stages in their lives. He names these: “secure orientation, painful disorientation, and surprising reorientation” (27). As Christians, no matter our recurring ups and downs, we always have hope in our belief that light dawns through darkness. God is ever present in whatever stage we find ourselves. For emphasis on this, Au also quotes spiritual writer, Wendy Wright. She writes, “In our nakedness, we are somehow more vulnerable to the divine touch” (28). Wilkie Au invites his reader to continually enter the “mysterious” newness of light and darkness, in “collaboration with God,” identifying our hands as His, throughout the daily rituals of life (163). Collectively, the compilation of writings, within The Enduring Heart, offers the sophistication of time-honored Christian traditions, together with the contemporary language and skills, which are needed to pray the opportunities and setbacks of daily life today.
