I'm actually rather satisfied with it. I enjoyed it a lot. It has a fresh take on turn based combat, a basic story that doesn't try too hard to be mind blowing, a breathtaking world that looks incredibly smooth for 1998, and an interesting spell system where you can choose what elements you want to level up. Not nearly as bad as people put it for. I recommend it. Especially since it only goes for about 5 to 10 dollars due to poor online reviews. Now, i'm not calling it perfect. My major complaints are that the story ends up splitting and doesn't return to its base (yes, there is a story -- you just need to talk to people), the Earth element is overpowered, and items in general. I'll explain the later two in detail. At only level 36 out of 50, Earth gets an invincibility spell that lasts several turns. behind that you can buff and spam Avalanche -- which is only level 24 to cast, hits hard, and while it throws bolder in random directions (I've missed plenty of times), it also potentially hits several times (i've hit up to 5 times -- each ranging from around 90 to 250 based on the monster's defenses.) If these were either made much weaker or were at higher levels, I feel this game would be more enjoyable. I also wish the other elements got spells that would deal significant amounts of damage so that weaknesses would have mattered later in the game. Before you get Healing 2 (lvl25 water) and Avalanche the game is actually pretty challenging. So I'd suppose avoiding earth would give this game its intended challenge. Finally, Items are a bit iffy. I had no issue keeping stocked up, but less experienced RPG players may find it frustrating. You can't buy items. You can only find them via shops, chests, and monster drops. Shops will ONLY give you an item if you are out of said item, so if you constantly use items, you'll run into trouble. Especially since Monsters don't drop very often. I obtained maybe 10 items via drops the entire game. And outside of healing items, most items aren't particularly useful because they're all one time use. I at least wish the monster drops were more frequent. Problems aside, I still find this to be a very fun game when you get into it. I can honestly say I'd give it a 7/10.Read full review
Though it's an old game, don't be fooled. This game has an amazing and involved storyline, characters are very developed (aside from a few NPCs that could have had more development), graphics are amazing for the N64, and is one of the first games I've played that allowed free-reign attack. Sure you have a circle as your battle field, but overall it's a great game! You have control over 4 elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) with four levels each. You can learn new abilities usually by fighting the boss of the area. Only downfall I found was the story ended too quickly for my tastes, but then again, even with newer games being 3-4 discs long, their storylines tend to be sped through in the later half of the game. This storyline is steady, not a slow beginning like most RPG/Adventure genre games of its kind. A definite must play!!!Read full review
