I have been buying Wemo products for years now. I have first generation light switches, in-door plugs as well as out-door plugs. I have had excellent succes with my wemo plugs until this last purchase. Wemo has now tied itself up with Apple Homekit. So, as a result, Apple Homekit tries to take over the set up for the light switch I purchased. Not a problem until you realize that the Wemo app won't recognize the switch. But, guess what? The Homekit App has it! But, there's a catch, in order to use the automation in Homekit, you need Apple TV or Apple Home Hub. So, something so simple as adding the device to the app is now complex. Here is the workaround: when the device turns on for the first time (after a factory reset or for the first time) let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Then, it will no longer default to Homekit. You can now connect to it directly from your iphone. Just go to your WiFi settings and simply connect directly to the device. From that point, you can add the device to your Wemo app. This took me hours to research and fix (I tried a dozen different trouble shooting steps). This used to be a great product. I have close to 20 wemo smart switches and plugs and they’ve worked ok to date. Setup on the newer model devices are pretty good, however the legacy devices are starting to fail and not accepting new firmware updates. The app is flakey and connectivity is starting to be less stable. It’s unfortunate because it’s costly to switch when you have this many devices. This will be my last wemo purchase as I’m starting to migrate over to a competitor (TP Link). Not only do their products and app work better, their prices are almost 1/2 of that of wemo.

I've had three WLS40 switches in my home for a few years. They all have had frequent and periodic connection issues with the Wemo app. I finally looked into this issue. The Wemo switches wil stay connected to the Wemo app if you assign a static IP address to each of them. The only way I found to do that is by reserving the IP address for each switch on my router. Since doing this, the three switches and the two new ones I've added have stayed connected to my network and the Wemo app. I have called and spoken with their support staff. I found them to be very patient and helpful. Unfortunately, the Dawn/Dusk part of scheduling doesn't work.
