Haven't started using this set, yet, but purchased based on last year's use of previous level. Saxon does a great job of continually reviewing past concepts which is great for students who may forget if they don't get occasional review of what was learned earlier.

I did buy the used homeschool kit and it is not in the greatest condition. It is acceptable but would buy again used math books? No!

I absolutely love this series for teaching math, especially to kids who don't pick up math easily. It uses lots of repetition, without being boring by doing the same thing for ten pages then moving on. I am also pleased with the liberal use of word problems as these are what we apply math to in daily life. If you follow the program and test frequently, there should be no doubt in your mind where student strengths and weaknesses lie. I would not recommend using this series with someone who has difficulty reading, however Saxon does provide revised lessons if requested.
I homeschool my eight year son and love using the Saxon math series. It explains and breaks down each concept into easy, understandable processes. It then reviews the concepts in the following lessons to come. My son found learning multiplication, divison, and fractions very easy. My son is in third grade but is in Saxon's 7/6 math book. I would recommend taking Saxon's online placement to be sure where your child fits.
We liked the simple explanation for learning this subject of math. My student has been able to accomplish assignment for the most part on his own. When problem solving this book refers him back to chapter for review. I chose this math curriculum because it was inexpensive. I wanted my son to develop better writing skill while at same time thinking and problem solving which was something he would have not had with software math curriculum.
