Product Information

Director Isao Takahata (GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES) and the acclaimed Japanese animation studio Ghibli are the creative forces behind the environmental fable POM POKO (HEISEI TANUKI GASSEN POMPOKO). In the woods near a rapidly growing city, a group of tanuki (Japanese raccoons) live in relative peace, until the development of the town begins to intrude on their land. The tanuki are faced with a dilemma regarding the human beings, for their homes are being destroyed, but the tanuki also rely on the human community for scavenged food and goods. They decide to try using their powers of illusion and shapeshifting to scare the humans back to the central city and sabotage further building, but will their efforts come too little, too late? POM POKO uses the figure of the tanuki, an important animal in Japanese folklore and often attributed with the powers seen in the film, to comment on the nature of their society's geographic expansion and the subsequent impact on the natural world.

    Raccoons Change the World...?

    Well, not really. This is a look into Japanese folklore and the role raccoons played at one time. It takes us into 1960's Japan (a bit of modern history). I enjoyed how the raccoons transformed, and their silliness. In many ways, they acted quite human. One thing I felt would have made it better is, if it had been shorter. 2 hours was too much for this tale. It's not the fancy animation we have grown used to, but not the reason I gave it only 3 stars. The preview made it look much better than I found it to be. However, if you like something like this, don't let my review stop you.

    ok movie... not favorite... Should still own...

    I love studio Ghibli films and Hayoa Miyazaki. and don't get me wrong i'm glad i own this and its still funny and interesting. but it definitely is not my favorite of the ghibli's. There are some cultural things i almost couldn't even take seriously... still good to have in your collection if you collect all Ghibli's and/or Miyazaki's... Very Environmental friendly. and almost all the voices are familiar from Futurama or Simpsons and more...
